Seven of Nine

I always found Seven to be a very interesting character skillfully portrayed by Jeri Ryan. But I would have preferred that they kept Jennifer Lien's Kes on the show, too, as I found here character just as fascinating. They really should have lost Harry Kim instead, who was never more than a bland cypher to me. I would have loved to see Seven and Kes develop a friendship.

Oh, and Praetor, I really should have read this thread before sending you my last PM, eh? I feel stupid.

I don't think there is an in-universe explanation that makes sense, so I just try not to notice. I'm not always successful, as you can tell, but heck, they don't show her feet that often.

There is no in-universe explanation that makes sense. The heels served two purposes. One, because yes, Jeri needs heels to look good. She's got a long torso and comparatively short legs. (I know what that's like, I've got a similar build--without the boobs --I am most always in heels or some sort of platform).

Two, it made Seven look taller--put her on eye-level with the men. Jeri's got a rather dainty bone structure, and the heels gave her a more powerful look.

And, for the record, every single female on Trek--with the exception of 6 ft Terry Farrell--wore heels.

(People always ask me how many pairs I have, but I would really rather not know! ) But I have a job that is primarily a desk job. On a ship it looks silly. It didn't make her look powerful - it looked silly. And kind of trashy, to be honest. They could have found a more subtle way to make her look taller, if that was important. People managed with Clark Gable, after all.

All of the women wore 3-1/2 inch heels. Jeri's were 4-inch.

Seven's costume was a throwback to the super-heroine costumes of yore. Tacky, of course. Trashy? I don't think so.

I would have loved to see Seven moving into "normal" clothing (in quotes, because fashion in Trek's 24th century is pretty pathetic). And Jeri would have loved it, too. The corset was most uncomfortable.

No need, the costume was for better or worse a visual aspect of the character, and a rather lame one IMO. Your Aquagirl comparison was a rather good one - the thing did tend to look like a bad diving suit from time to time.

See, that was another thing I thought was lame. She grew somewhat emotionally and sporadically but there was no real 'overall' change by the end of the series. She didn't even warrant quarters. I know, I know 'Borg systems are integrated into her body blah blah blah' but that was just an excuse. They could have ditched the recharge slot and still kept the doohickeys on her.

It was made pretty clear in "Human Error" that Seven didn't consider herself "worthy" of quarters until she was "fully human"--i.e. all Borg implants gone.

That's some heavy stuff there. Yet, she was treated as cargo by the crew. They wandered in and out of the cargo bay without signaling her. If she was regenerating, oh well. Stand and watch the freak show.

Did Janeway ever think to offer her quarters? If so, it was offscreen.

Of course, if they wanted too, the writers could easily have made up some explanation about the height of her heels. Maybe, having spent years with an endoskeleton, her spine was distorted. High heels helped her stand in a corrective posture.
Complete waffle I know. I liked the heels, and the catsuit, and am pathetic enough to try to justify them!
