Inspired by the biblical story of King David, this contemporary soap is about a typical small town guy who becomes involved with high society and politics and rises to the top against all odds.

Kings is produced by 3 Arts Entertainment in association with Universal Media Studios and distributed by the NBC Television Network. The series has been given a 13 episode initial order.

In this special two hour premiere episode, battles between the neighboring nations of Gilboa and Gath rage. One soldier named David Shepherd, takes action when he sees prisoners of war taken. After crossing enemy lines to rescue them, he is told he just saved the king of Gilboa's son. His life forever changes in that moment.

I think this show has some excellent potential. Ian was awesome as the King. The son gave me a bad Peter Petralli vibe but I am hoping that was just the premiere episode. Princess is very hot. All in all I will add this to my dvr list for the first season.

Liked it! Above above average & right below excellent.

Pilot very interesting, catching.

For some reason in adds on SFC On Demand airing during BSG episodes I thought the King was Al Pacino. Ian McShane plays the King yes?

Wonder how this corporate skullduggery/monarchist government tangled web will unweave?

A great first episode.

I love the concept, love the cast (Ian McShane and Dylan Baker), the sets (and city) look great.

Hope we're in for a sweet ride!

What a well written pilot! Really enjoyed it, and it held my attention for the entire two hours. I'll be watching more.

So what kind of alternate universe is this? Does this 'kingdom' exist in any particular place on Earth (i.e. does America, for example, not exist in this world?) or could it be anywhere?

Loved it. The cast great the dialogue really clever and it was directed by Francis Lawrence who directed Constantine and I Am Legend.

Above Average. I am very intrigued. David wasnt nearly as bad as i thought he'd be. the Prince was pretty bad. Samuel was interesting... then we have the King. awesome.

i really want to see how things unfold and how close the story parallels King David.

They don't really say. There are 3 countries (that I remember) mentioned. Gilboa (the country where the characters live), Gath (at war with Gilboa in the pilot) and Osteria (maybe Austeria).

We know that the capital of Gilboa is Shiloh, newly built on top of the ruins of an abandoned city, is fairly close to Gilboa's border with Gath.

Culturally we know that composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886) existed in this world as well as ours, so the POD is somewhere after his time period, or at least late in his life when he'd already become a composer.

Anyone know if a Canadian channel is going to carry it or should I hope there's a repeat's on NBC that I can watch over cable?

Sounds like it was worthwhile (I was on vacation so I haven't seen my tape yet) but I guess we should get this over with. I thought this premise had little chance of attracting a mainstream audience, and sure enough...

Beginning with Kings, the aforementioned two-hour debut was stalled at the gate, with a mere 6.00 million viewers and a 1.6 rating/4 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Take a look how Kings declined in every half hour in total viewers.

Kings (NBC) – series premiere
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 6.47 million (#3), A18-49: 1.6/ 5 (#4)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 6.33 million (#3), A18-49: 1.6/ 4 (#4)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 5.71 million (#4), A18-49: 1.6/ 4 (#4)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 5.49 million (#4), A18-49: 1/7/ 4 (#4)

Not a terrible in-show dropoff. Shows almost always drop in their premieres; Kings stayed stable in the demo and even grew a bit - very unusual. The total number of viewers doesn't count anyway, apparently the show just shed viewers in unimportant demos. (And Berman's analysis was flawed when he made anything out of the drop in overall viewers; he should really know better!)

A show like Kings belongs on basic cable. Network TV is becoming the home of the Very Lowest Common Denomenator. The interesting stuff is all on basic and premium cable where niche tastes can still carry a show financially.

Kings' audience was made up of the folks who'd already identified themselves based on the ads as people interested in the premise; that accounts for the stable premiere ratings. So I'd say this show has a loyal audience that is likely to stick around, it's just too small for the show to be sticking around. If it were on AMC, it would be another story.

Then again, this is NBC. If the ratings don't slip very much further in the demos, it just might get another season. But only if someone at NBC is really pulling for it. The cutoff point for NBC shows renewal is about Chuck's level - and that's at 2.1/6 in the demo.

Damn, that was excellent. I'll be watching next week.

The son gave me a bad Peter Petralli vibe but I am hoping that was just the premiere episode.

The difference is that the prince was supposed to be a sniveling little douche-bag. :D
