Kings: 3/15: "Goliath" - Grading & Discussion (Two-hour premiere)

True. Am especially enjoying the two palace guards (whom I'm caling Rosencrantz and Guldenstern) who seem to do the right wrong things at all the right times.

HA! That's exactly what I said to my husband when we watching it. "I'm calling those guys Rosencrantz and Guildenstern."

I don't think that's fair. So far, the guards seem like stand up guys. And they've saved out hero's life, as opposed to those ponces from Denmark who spied on Hamlet and would have unwittingly transported him to his death if all had gone according to their plan.

I think they are to obvious as the comic relief. While everybody else in thre palace is to prett and perfect, the Queen's assistants, political operatives. The military, etc all of the sudden the Royal Guardsmen look like a couple who owe their jobs to the union.

And I agree that David is a boring lead character, but most TV shows having boring leads and snazzy supporting characters.

They do? The ones I watch tend to have riveting, charismatic leads, whether they are Bill Adama or Chuck Bartowski. David being a snooze is one of the major disincentives to continuing to watch.

Well, I think the actor is fine... but the character he's playing is dull as dishwater. That's the problem with making your lead character oh-so-noble and oh-so-honest- it really doesn't give the actor much to work with. Hopefully, the writers and the actor will be able to overcome the character's purity and convince me to care about him.

If the show was able to survive somehow, maybe USA network, then David does become less pure and noble. Who knows maybe they jumped to those stories as part of the 13 episodes produced.

If it does get cancelled hopefully they release the series on DVD.

But really, would it have killed them to get a military adviser to describe the proper use of tanks on the modern battlefield. Pillboxes indeed!

I don't think that part is honestly that important. The series is more or less a retelling of the story of King David in a modern setting that is easy to understand for the American audience.

And in the Bible Goliath basically stands out in front and dares the Israelis to do something about him as a cease fire seemed to be in effect along the front.

I know, but it still breaks me out of my suspension of disbelief when I am looking at that many tanks and thinking "Why don't they just run over those guys?" If you are going to create a military scenario you should try to make it at least a little sensible. Or any situation really.
It's not a deal breaker for me. Like I said I like the show, it just detracts from my enjoyment when something is so silly. I mean they could have at least shown a few Gilboan tanks.

Today's episode showed a map of the region, and it's clear that Gilboa is not meant to be located within the same space as NYC. There was a body of water of the western side of Gilboa and Gath.

I noticed that as well--there also appeared to be a third (unnamed) region on the map coloured grey, just north of Port Prosperity and to the west of Gath.

So the first Saturday night showing of Kings did horrible and it's a sure bet for cancellation: Kings (Viewers: #4, 2.41 million; A18-49: #4, 0.6/ 2)

Oh well, there is always the DVD to look forward to. I wonder if it will get extra features?

On a side note TBN leaped in to fill the void by airing one of their King David movies last Sunday.

Why does he have to become that way? This current trend of television protagonists being complete assholes is getting tiresome. The compelling thing I liked about The Star Wars Trilogy (IV-VI) was that Luke was noble and pure, fought wars, stared at the abyss, and emerged with his soul intact. I think they could write David as a person of noble intentions who is prone to mistakes but still strives to do the right thing. Not every show has to have deplorable BSG archetypes in order to be good.

But that's how it turned out in the original script!

David needs to really be written as a passionate hothead, who starts off righteous, with right intentions & actions, but is slowly tempted , but then has some righteous recovery (to a point).

To be honest, it's like that in real life....people may peak in their 20's or so in terms of doing activity that helps humanity (like peace corps), but then get bogged down by the responsibilities in life, and then also drop their guard in certain areas, and fall from that previous "righteousness" aren't often as effective as they used to be.
