First Picture Of The New K9

^ Ah. And they can't even make references to the Doctor Who properties in this non-BBC production because of rights considerations. Based on that, maybe Leeson won't be the voice.

The snout is glowing blue! The left ear should be blue and the right ear should be pink. Also, I think Tom Baker should play the left ear. And is there any way we could get k9's nose to look more like a sombrero? or maybe replace it with a sombrero?

All joking aside, it looks alright, but I still prefer the original at this point. It better be voice by John Leeson, I don't want to hear David Brierley!

I don't like it, it looks evil.

Plus I really liked the older version a lot, the one from the new show. It was a ncie mix of the old old version and being up to date.

Bob Baker offered some further comments about the new series at his forum. He doesn't say it in so many words, but it sure sounds like John Leeson won't be providing K9's voice, which is disappointing. He also confirms an earlier implication that this K9 will be Mark 1, who had stayed with Leela on Gallifrey in "The Invasion of Time." The first few scenes will feature a replica of the Mark 1, which eventually is rebuilt in the new form.

Also, the production company's website has some details on the series' premise (scroll down a little), and there's a partial list of episode titles here.

Hm, that's a different premise than we heard earlier, where all the action took place in space as I recall. The Whoniverse really doesn't need another defending-the-Earth series right now.

NO JOHN LEESON. :(

Yeah, the originally announced premise for the series was pretty different:
An old Prairie class spacecraft is drifting towards distant stars. She is The “ Platte ” once used for the colonisation of Asteroids.

On board are:-

SLOCUM - mid-thirties, rugged, taciturn who thinks of himself as a dealer in valuable commodities - others would say he just collects junk! He is a loner – a space gypsy! It's the only way he knows. He's in no hurry to get anywhere and he stays well off the beaten track.

DJINN - a V997 (F), an overactive computer module in the shape of an attractive young woman. She was programmed by the ship's previous owners to provide stimulating conversation. Something that SLOCUM would happily change if only he had knowledge of her operating codes!

Together they discover an apparently abandoned battle cruiser. Whereupon they meet K-9!

I actually don't mind this new dog apart from the ears which I think make him look stupid. I'll be interested to see a full shot of him. I doubt he'll be as easy to build as the original though :)

From the Wikipedia entry:

After production started, the Park Entertainment website was updated to say that the series was set in Future London, with 14-year old characters Starkey and Jorjie, alongside a Professor Gryffen, who is experimenting with a Space-Time Manipulator, and an "artful dodger" 15-year-old Darius who runs errands for Gryffen. K9 Mark I follows the villainous reptilian warrior Jixen who come through a space-time portal created by the professors experiments and saves the Londoners. While protecting them, K9 is forced to self-destruct, but is able to give Starkey instrucions to rebuild and regenerate himself into a more futuristically designed form. K9 and the humans then form the front line defense against alien menaces from outer space and other times.

This all seems strangely familar somehow...

does the first K9, look like the one in Doctor Who then?

So it would appear. Looking at that info, and the list of episode titles, it seems possible that the old K-9 will appear for quite a bit - maybe the first half of the opening two parter, with his apparent destruction and regeneration ending part one.

Also... it might be a bit of a '2+2=5' to assume that this K-9 is actually Leela's one because Bob Baker says they've built one 'identical to the one Leela had on Gallifrey'; About Time volume 4 speculates that while Professor Marius says he had K-9 made up from spare parts on the Bi-al asteroid, he might have been 'kit-bashing' a design available back on Earth.

TBH I would be VERY surprised if they were to use a K9 the same design as on Doctor Who

Stand by to be surprised then, to judge by this quote from a posting by Bob Baker:
"We have built a copy of old K9 for the opening scenes, identical to the one Leela had in Galifrey."

if this project isnt careful its going to seem like a legit Doctor Who spin-off, not just a project with a robot dog similar to K9.

Well, of course they want it to be as much like a legitimate Who spinoff as they can without pissing off the BBC. I assume there's been some agreement for limited use of the BBC-owned original design, possibly as a quid pro quo for K9's appearances in SJA and "Journey's End."

but I was planning to ignore this series, and pretend it didnt happen, this will make it harder for me to do that

There are mulitple K-9's. Leela has/had the first one. Romana has/had the second one. Sarah had the third and has the fourth one. I don't see a problem if they want to take the Leela version (having somehow escaped the destruction of Gallifrey) and do a kiddie spin-off...
