The new trailer says one thing about mass appeal to me...

I seriously think that a large percentage of the population (at least here in the USA) are closet Trekkies. all JJ needs to do is bring 'em out.

It doesn't have to be dumbed down, it just has to be accessible. Take time to introduce and motivate the characters and it's all good. Be too insider-ish and you alienate viewers.

Exactly.....I dont think u can call Voyager (latter half), Enterprise, Insurrection or Nemesis cerebral trek ------ It was mediocre sci fi at best...
I think JJ and BO and AK will find it quite hard to dumb it down even further than the trek Ive just mentioned.

Now, to the topic. I saw the trailer in front ow "Watchmen" last night (I really really liked Watchmen for the 2 cents that it's worth). and there was a buzz after the trailer played. Pretty much apathy for everything else sans Terminator 4.

As far as the mass appeal thing goes, if you're Paramount that's probably the holy grail. They'll want it to appeal to everybody. Personally can't say that I blame them though I do go into this hoping it'll still at least resemble the Trek i've loved in all of it's other incarnations.

I noticed the same thing, at both showings of Watchmen I've seen (once in IMAX, which you would expect to be more hardcore geeky, so I take that with a grain of salt.)

Keeping mass appeal while staying true to the essence of the thing - yep, that's pretty much what it all boils down to. and it's damn difficult to do - sometimes producers squash the creative instincts of the director, other times the director goes off the deep-end and there is nobody there to reign them in, sometimes they just take their paycheck and get out. There are dozens of ways a franchise movie can fall off that balance beam. For that reason, I'm going to err on the side of forgiveness, and focus on what they did right.

We don't know exactly how much Trek has been dumbed down for this new movie, but if the franchise is emaciated in the name of wide appeal, I wouldn't consider that much of a victory.

What would you call INS, NEM, Voyager or Enterprise? So many times Rick Berman, or the powers that be at UPN/Paramount tried to mainstream Berman's Trek and it continued to fail miserably.

It CAN'T get any worse that what we had a few years ago - A Star Trek franchise driven into the ground by gross mismanagement and stagnation. At worst, we'll be right back where we were - with nothing.

I went to the movies today, and my friend I went with was buddies with one of the people working the theater, so we went in early and chatted about upcoming releases. Apparently, my theater is expecting a pretty good showing for Star Trek. The guy said that there was some grumblings from the Trekkie side of the aisle, but overall the buzz for the movie is pretty good. That excites me. :)

That's GREAT to hear!:techman:
Oddly enough, the more "grumbling" from the Trekkie side of the aisle, the more people will likely see the movie...
Very True!:shifty:

Trekkie side of the aisle, huh?

Do they make them sit in the back of the bus (oops) back of the theater, or are they ID'd by their IDIC tattoos on the backs of their wrists?

If the grumblings were intelligible, you certainly could tell if they were Trekkies or not, don't you think?

Just like guffaws and heckles would show you who the hicks were...

That doesn't explain the apparent segregation, which was my point. Last time I checked, it had been thirty-odd years since there was a smoking section in movie theaters, and that was even before there were TREK movies.

Metaphorical Trekkie side of the aisle. As in they are hearing a lot more, "I can't believe they're doing this to Trek. The Enterprise looks all wrong!" etc than they are hearing, "Trek? People still watch that stuff?"

As in things Trekkies grumble about versus things that the rest of the world would grumble about.

Figuratively speaking, in other words, which was pretty clearly the way you intended it to be read.

Wow, had no idea I was so dense.
