A New Star Trek Series?

I read this on one of my blogs this morning...Anyone have any thoughts, or hear any additional info you'd like to share?
With the upcoming movie possibly launching the 2.0 universe that wipes the slate clean on the last 40 years of Star Trek continuity, it was only a matter of time before talk of a new TV series started.

Bryan Fuller, creator of Pushing Daisies, current writer on Heroes, and previous Trek writer has indicated he would like to relaunch the franchise on the small screen.

"I told my agent and told the people of J.J. Abrams' team I want to create another Star Trek series and have an idea that I’m kicking around. I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colours and attitude. I loved Voyager and Deep Space Nine, but they seem to have lost the ‘60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin."

"Somehow, it got cold over the years. I love Next Generation, but it’s a little cooler and calmer than the ones from the ‘60s, which were so dynamic and passionate. Deep Space Nine was the best of the modern ones, because it was so emotionally complicated. Enterprise was the most sterile of all of them, when it should have been the most fun. Star Trek has to recreate itself. Otherwise, all the characters start to feel the same. You always have a captain, a doctor, a security officer, and you have the same arguments based on those perspectives. It starts to feel too familiar. So all those paradigms where it takes place on a starship have to be shaken up."

I agree with & feel the same as Mr. Fuller about the aura, atmosphere, feel &/or signature TOS has. I love it. Its unique.

NO other Trek since has been able to duplicate that, that, charm?, charisma?. I can't think of the right word for it.

Mr. Fuller's ideas no doubt has it's pros & cons. Is he right in beginning a new ST canonuity? Or should post-Trek 11 still be part of the ST-andard Canonuity?

Or, a 3rd option is be bold & daring & take a chance starting a New Sci-Fi Franchise. But film & make this new SF show in the style, feel, mood & atmosphere of TOS.

Something new but done in a memorable old way

Hollywood's covered itself to death at this point.

This film is gonna be huge Everyone I talk to about it groans at the prospect of yet another Trek movie, but they get interested about it when I mention it's about the origins of Kirk and Spock.

I could do without a new Trek series. I'm happy with what we have. I'm excited about the new film though, and I hope there are a series of films. If they did do another tv show, I'd prefer it be set in the alternate reality of the new film.

There's been sporadic talk over the past few years of a new Trek series, mainly of the wishful-thinking variety. It's such an obvious idea that people can't help thinking about it. Sure, there are obstacles to a new series but I've been here long enough to remember when people thought "Trek is dead!!!!" after ENT was cancelled. Didn't stay dead long, did it.

I knewTrek wasn't "dead" for the same reason I'm sure there will be another TV series, probably sooner than we realize: If the money is there, the likelihood is that it will happen. If the movie is a hit, which is looking more likely all the time, a TV series is a certainty. Why develop a property with such a natural fit for TV if you're not going to exploit that revenue stream? You're just leaving money on the table and Hollywood is not in business to deliberately lose money.

And I could envision ways Trek could make money on TV, probably the same way Heroes does - a reasonably sized domestic audience on a major network plus international revenues plus DVD sales plus whatever paid downloads bring in (not much of a factor now, but it can only grow over time.)

On the minus side, Trek can't do in-show product placements (which means TiVO viewings won't count for spit, and Trek is likely to be heavily time-shifted). On the plus side, Trek merchandising is a serious revenue stream.

The biggest problem is where to air Trek. None of the options are particularly good, but a mainstream network (but not CBS, the demos are all wrong) is the least-bad option. Trek probably won't kick ass on a mainstream network - genre shows just don't thrive there anymore - which is why you need to cobble together an overall financial support system.

Forget cable - first-run Trek on Sci Fi would be an embarrassing admission of failure; AMC is too specialized; HBO and Showtime are too adult-skewing - any sci fi series that aired there now would be expected to be more R-rated and sophisticated in storytelling and characterization than we want Trek to be. We want Trek to be good, but it shouldn't be The Wire or The Sopranos.

Send Trek back to NBC, where even an audience of 7M or so will be a hit. Maybe less by the time the show is ready to air.

Well I've mainly talked about the business end of things but Fuller sounds like he understands the creative content just about perfectly.

He'll do what it takes to make $$$ and make himself look good. If he's smart, he'll realize that CBS is humming along just fine with their successful strategy of Police Procedurals for Grandma. And granny isn't interested in Trek. He can cut a deal to place Trek elsewhere - NBC and Fox seem like far more natural homes for it - as long as he gets revenues off the deal, what does he care where it airs? It's just a matter of writing up the deal, getting the lawyers to bless it, and signing on the dotted line. That's what businesspeople do. There's no reason at all that Trek must appear on CBS.

I agree with Temis the Vorta. This cannot be some UPN (not even around anymore) network show like Enterprise was. We need a network show and NBC is the best fit right now. There is a ton of money to be made on Star Trek if it is done right...

I hope so, but I doubt it, Moonves is a REAL Sci-fi hater, so he ''MAY'' tolerate it, but ''NOT'' love it.

Brian Fuller is exactly the type of guy to bring Trek back to the small screen. The dude oozes creativity.


What we need is our own Russel Davies (the guy who resurrected Doctor Who)... someone who genuinely loves and understands the franchise but is talented enough to cut out the shitty parts and make something good.

Of course, the downside would be a risk of premature cancellation. Fuller's shows tend to be too creative and interesting to last long on network television.

I sincerely can't imagine any prequel-to-TNG series being green lit after the disaster that Enterprise turned out to be.

And to be honest, I'd rather not have Trek come back to TV at all if it means having another series that would hurt the continuity of the entire franchise by undermining the validity of events laid out in TNG/DS9/Voy.

I'll stick to books.

Check back on a tv series around 2014. (Gawd, that sounds so far off and futuristic! -it's a 5 year mission away...)
