Last ditch for insurance fails...

Thespeckledkiwi

Vice Admiral
As a temp worker for a company right now I don't have insurance. I am pressuring myself hard to get a full time position but that might be a few months away, if not longer. In May my insurance officially ends with my dad's company and my mom is terrified. She deals with the insurance, any of our insurance within the family, simply because she knows the ins and outs of it since hell we were born. And she tried multiple different avenues and different ways. She even tried to lie on the application to try and get me some insurance but it's a no go. No one will insure me except the Texas Risk Pool, which sounds more like Russian Roulette in a swimming pool than an insurance company. So now my options are move out of the house and not have insurance or stay where I live and have insurance. Yeah, it sucks, a lot. And it's not the best insurance either.

Personally I am absolutely terrified of not having insurance and I am actually very depressed over this.

at least you are concerned.
so many people are just blithe about this.

i know you dont like it but if it looks like you can get a full time job within the next year then stay at home if it means you are insured.

what may have been the first symptoms of my illness started while i was still working three part jobs without much insurance.
so there were certain tests i couldnt have done.

i was just lucky by the time it went full blown i had a full time position with insurance.

Hang in there, TBC. I am not qualified for any health insurance plan that costs less than $500 a month, and it doesn't cover half of what I would need it to cover, so even having something is, well, something. I have nothing, and a lot less money to do it with.

I feel your pain. I've been paying $400 a month for my COBRA, but it is expiring in a few months. And right now I am not even employed. I suppose I could get private insurance. Let's see I have diabetes, psychiatric conditions, and a history of heart trouble. Either I'll get laughed out of their offices or expect to pay four figures a month. But as people are always telling me now that Obama is in office all our problems will be solved.

Seriously, I know how you feel. I need a lot of medications and i don't know yet how i can pay for them. One trip to the hospital and I am financially finished. I'd recommend stay where you are until you get a full-time job and can get on your feet. Good luck.

ADD social anxiety and depression kinda screw my chances at getting Insurance. Go to hell CNBC.

COBRA is a freaking rip-off. How about Blue Cross/Blue Shield?

Depending on the plan, COBRA can be enormously expensive. Although the stimulus package does include a COBRA subsidy, so it's worth looking into.

And I agree on insurance fraud. If they find out that you lied on application forms, they will go after you for every penny they've spent on your behalf, and you could be looking at criminal charges as well. Insurance companies don't fuck around with that kind of stuff.

I asked about COBRA when I left my last job. The monthly cost they quoted me was about $540 per month.

No, thanks. I'll just use Band-aids for 90 days.

I didn't have insurance from age 18 to 40 and luckily didn't need it. I don't know where you are but are there any public programs that can help out?

COBRA really is a very last resort. My SIL has her family on it since her husband got laid off (and isn't even looking, the loser) and it's very expensive on her day care income. But if you think it's expensive now, wait til it's free.

I'm worried about losing my insurance, although I don't lose it until next January. I just hope I don't develop a pre existing condition if I do I'm screwed. I hope they manage to pass some kind of health care reform that is works and helps people, if you are one of those that thinks things are fine the way they are you have your head in the sand.

Holy crap on those prices, guys! I've got catastrophic insurance, myself and my monthly payment is $80 on an individual plan.

I wish I knew what to tell you, TBC. But you should stay put with your family for now so you have insurance, I think. In the meantime, keep looking for a good job and look for a good individual plan if possible.

Depends on how you look like it. Now you can COBRA and only have to pay 35% of the premium, your employer now has to pick up the other 65%.

BCBS will probably deny him. They denied me 3 times in a single application, and I have diabetes and high blood pressure.

Eh, Blue Cross/Blue Shield was what I was on but they denied my coverage multiple times.

Technically it wasn't 'lying' but we kind of bent the truth a little...and left somethings out that weren't technically problems or things we forgot about :)
