Re-watching TNG from the beginning!

I've actually pretty much just finished my runthrough of TNG. All that's left is the final episode and I've seen it before.

Me too. The biggest revelation for me this time was just how good some of the (few) good season 7 episodes were. I couldn't believe how original and involving "Lower Decks" was. Such a great concept showing how the unknown crew members perceive the "big 7" (especially the way they wonder about the senior staff meetings...it made me feel like we take for granted being privy to all the juicy information of those meetings :)), and the girl who becomes the main character was brilliantly written and played. Her scenes with Picard were unforgettably intense (never before I have seen Picard so authoritative and intimidating) and his announcement about her at the end was so powerful it almost brought me to tears. Now I'm off to watch "All Good Things...".

TNG stories hold up well. The acting holds up well. The uniforms and sets, however, haven't aged well.

Some of the sets are beautiful! They won Emmys for the production design. Its had its share of bad ones though from time to time. Its the format they used to transfer to that still is a problem after all these years. I wish it were as sharp as Enterprise and in widescreen.

I absolutely agree. When I was watching TNG at the time I was really bored and frustrated by the seventh season, but I look back on it now and there are some real gems. Some of my favoruite episodes come from season seven. Admittedly there's a better than average set of klunkers, but episodes like Parallels, Pegasus and Lower Decks are great, I think. I also like Gambit a great deal, too.

TNG video masters

Heh...well, i'm still on Season 3 and so far, its like a quantum leap from the first 2 seasons. They might've upgraded their cameras and studio or something cause it looks way better 'produced' in a good way.

Trekjiro, please see this post about the video quality differences between the seasons:

Once you read that continue on here:
It is possible that the actual telecine in 1989 was from 35mm film to D2 videotape and then that reduced the 2 or 3 generations of analog videotape used (film-to-tape telecine, edit, effects compositing on videotape, tape-to-tape color correction to final master). If it stayed on D2 tape through the various post production processes that would add to the cumulative "looks way better" effect. Not sure, but most importantly it was archived on D2 for 13 or so years before the DVDs were made of the seasons. It is that long period where analog videotape does not hold up well and looks different over time.

Well, since I started this thread I thought I would update it...

I am about halfway through Season 3... found season 1 and 2 hard going LOL, its funny after all these years how when i was a kid I thought it was all brilliant, but now as an Adult, well its slightly different to how I remembered it! Not to say I'm not enjoying it, I am loving watching it all over again, but the clunker of the bad episodes are hard to sit through... lol. Looking forward to it picking up in S3...

Other observations...

1. How Jonathan seems to walk like an ape sometimes...

2. Troi's ever expanding wig...

3. How underused Worfy was for a while there... and how overused Wesley was!

4. Whoopi's brilliant acting and ridiculously large hats...

:)

Back problems. He shifted a lot of furniture as an out of work actor. There's an episode where he gets up from the briefing room chair and you can see a backbrace under his shirt.

Looking forward to season 3 updates. :)

^ I can't remember. It's definately when he's getting up from the briefing room table. Might be BOBW...
