TOS Shuttle "Upgrade" continuing

^ :) No, the purple fabric is just what I'm using right now in Lightwave to distinguish one material from another - you should see some of the other colors I'm using! That's why I stuck mostly to 'clay' for the Poser renders, just adding a bit of contrast or specularity to spice things up a little. Although ... it would probably fit in well with the color aesthetics of TOS ;).

CaptMurdock, thanks! I had created a basic control panel for the flight deck, but I'm not very fond of it any more - it was too sleek, almost like something from TNG. So I'm going back to the ol' drawing board to try to make something a bit mroe in keeping with TOS, but still complex enough that, with no Trek preconceptions, it would look practical and appropriate for this design (keeping in mind that I hope to sell the finished model as a non-Trek design, as I did with my first vehicle, the Dart; the nacelles will be a free add-on package, along with textures, for those who want the full-on Trek version :bolian: ).

Dude, I understand that you're busy in real life, what with the job and all, but you must do more work on this. Now. We need updates. Lots of 'em, and frequently. It's mucho cool.

BTW... do you even bother to check your voicemail anymore?

 Why, yes, I did! You said you were busy, tonight, though, and I didn't get your message until I got home (forgot my phone!)

I'm going to try to get some updates in by the weekend - I've been spending too much time on the challenge (these renders are taking FOREVER!!) and trying to research the new website (we can talk about that, too! ;)) Vancouver State Rulez!

BTW, I took some good hard looks at the concepts at the Chicago Auto Show last weekend - lots to think about for the interior design of the Lance; of course, I can't make it too futuristic - it still has to fit into TOS design ethics ;).

Ptorpe, this is fascinating. I'm intrigued and look forward to seeing this progress to completion.

Just a quick update: I got out the plywood, the hammer and nails, and put in a floor in the cockpit. Unlike the original Galileo, with its windows that the pilots couldn't see straight out of, I decided to raise the floor here so they can. Of course, that means steps, and it'll also mean some interesting jockeying of controls and cabinetry up front.

Again, this is just a screen cap from Lightwave; none of the colors are true, it's a low-res image, with no lighting - just what's in the modeler so I can see what I'm doing ;).

Ptrope, my friend, you never cease to amaze me with you fine work! Is it me, is the rounded hull design also a bit reminiscent of Franz Joseph's original sketches for the shuttle? Was this intentional on your part? I like it!

Either way, this is a great piece of work! Thanks for sharing!

I assume you mean Matt Jefferies's sketches ;). Yep, I definitely had that design in mind when I built up the hull - I've always liked his more aerodynamic concept, and tried to bridge that with what eventually was used. I didn't use Matt's actual design because we've got folks here who are already doing a bang-up job with it, and because I wanted the design to be original, for the requirements of the challenge.

Glad you like it! Thanks for the compliments :).

*Fwaps self* Matt Jeffries! A pox on me for a forgetful lout! Yes, I saw your pic just as I was leafing through some old MJ sketches. In a way, it makes more sense, aerodynamically, for an atmospheric ship to have either a pointed hull or a rounded one to deal with wind sheer (though I'd have given the original shuttle wings like the B5 atmospheric shuttles-ain't hindsight grand?-but TOS did amazingly well on a limited budget.

Another thing I like is the elevation change and a definitive cockpit area in your design, which seems sensible in a dedcated aircraft/spacecraft unless space is really, really at a premium. The change in elevation suggests extra machinery underneath for avionics (another practical consideration-you'd want that stuff easilly accessible in case of emergencies for ease of repair).

I like where this is going-keep up the great work.

Perhaps the purple is from the hides of the Andorian Nauga ...

BTW, no screen shots yet, but the control console of the Lance is looking somewhat like the dash of a '63 Corvette ... :)
