Oh, I understand. I remember him as well... He was around to answer questions when I was first starting to get into 3d Modeling.
Ah. I'm "getting back into" Blender. I'd love to play in it all day long and master it, but I've got to learn it "as needed" to enhance my work as a video producer and editor. A long time ago I asked four mad men if he'd consider writing some Trek-based tutorials. I was going to ask if that came to fruition. Now I'll just ask, "Hey, have you ever considered doing some Trek-based tutorials?
Actually, I want to snag him FIRST for a 're-imagination' of the FJ Tech Manual (certain starship-related pages) ... though I should probably ask his wife first.
Hey, she'll be ok with it. She does think it's neat when something I've done shows up other places. PM with what you had an idea about. I think I remember, but sometimes my memory is not so good.
Oh, it's not a secret or a huge deal.. what I was thinking was doing an homage to the TM's starship pages ( Section 01:04:00 ) with the 'NuTrek' ship designs. This would include the Saladin, Hermes, Constitution, Federation, Ptolemy, Pods, and a Shuttlecraft. Nothing too major, but thought it would be a fun, smallish project, but it might be worth it just to watch two distinct camps of fanbois explode. Not sure if we could throw it up on Lulu or anything, though. (I haven't heard from Karen in ages...)
I'm really not that familiar with the tech manual... I never had one. But, are you talking about the pages where all the classes are shown, in silhouette?
That's the first page, yes... http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints/sftm/01-04-00.jpg http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints/sftm/01-04-10.jpg http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints/sftm/01-04-12.jpg http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints/sftm/01-04-14.jpg http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints/sftm/01-04-16.jpg http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints/sftm/01-04-25.jpg Those are the 'ship' images pages. There are also cargo pods, and shuttlecraft.
UPDATE! The new trailer is out and we got some nice new angles on the Enterprise. MadMan1701A, how's it look?
This is good work! Just out of curiosity (and going backwards a bit), did you at any time try a "new" Enterprise with straight pylons? Would those help the proportions any?
It looks incredible. I will have to build a new model, at some point. Several of my assumptions were wrong. The biggest being the shuttlebay... and the back of the nacelles.
Thanks. I never did get around to it, but I think it wouldn't fit in with the rest. I mean, we already have tons of other curves, and the proportions wouldn't change as much. I'm worried it would make them looked tacked on.
After thinking about it, I agree. However, would it work if you KEPT the curved pylons and just opened them up (like opening a pair of calipers) to increase the distance between the nacelles? I could live with and even learn to like the other features of the ship but those nacelles are just TOO DANG CLOSE to each other...
They were spread farther apart on the previous version I built.... It's actually more similar to the TOS ship, than my newest one.
I see...honestly, I like this earlier one better...It may not be "screen accurate", but it's better proportioned. YMMV... Keep up the good work!
The lines on the saucer edge of the design a la the refit still bother me a bit but I suspect there will be easy rationalization of this post-film. Doesn't change the quality of Madman's model though.
It's really strange though. One little change the ship ship makes such a huge difference in it's overall appearance. It looks much more graceful.
Thanks. I'm thinking of keeping this model around, as a class variant. Maybe it can be the new Constellation?
