Amok Time question

AxelFoley

Commander
Red Shirt
I've been wondering about something in this episode for quite some time. As most of you know, Kirk & McCoy fool the Vulcan's by making them think Captain Kirk dies on planet Vulcan. The Vulcans are of course bound to find out the truth about this at some point.

Question: Won't they be pissed about this and take it up with the Federation? Won't this hurt Spock's reputation on Vulcan for being a part of it (for all they know)? They did after all break the rules of a very old tradition that they are very fond of.

If I remember correctly, Kirk actually did die, and that fulfilled the letter of the law if not the spirit - kind of the way Yareena's death in Code of Honor did, although it was explained better in Code of Honor, lousy episode though that was. Maybe that would be enough for the Vulcans? Or maybe they were relieved to have a messy incident settled without any major difficulties?

But I agree that it's a bit questionable. I've always thought so too.

I don't remember is his heart stopped completely, or if th drug just made him uncounscious & seemed to be dead. Maybe someone else knows?

I'm sure TOS-era vulcans would say "Hm. A very logical solution to a difficult situation. You are to be congratulated."

I think Kirk said Simulated Death, so no I don't think he was really dead. The Vulcan's didn't go over and examine him, McCoy beamed him up right away. Spock did believe he was dead. As for the Vulcan's with the T'Pring issue settled, I doubt they cared anymore about how.

Yes and besides wasn't it highly irregular that she chose a non-vulcan or otherworlder as Spocks opponent for her punanny?

T'Pau: "Vulcans do not get mad. Plus, why would we publicize the fact that we got tricked by some hayseed asswipe-of-a-doctor?"

Won't it be known anyway, somehow? If not, everyone would screw over the Vulcans at any given chance, since they won't get "mad" & stuff.

T'Pau: "Vhe don't have 'Entertainment Tonight' here, and Vulcans don't Twitter every goddamned moment of their lives to every asswipe in the universe. So who vill know vhat vent on at some jerkoff's vedding?"

I think they'd just hush-hush the whole situation, given how irregular it was to have an outworlder to know about the whole Vulcans-in-heat thingy, and even more, to witness it.

Ok, ok, ok. Wouldn't they at least spank Spock a little bit when he came back home for vacation?

OR, wouldn't T'pau use this against Spock when he tries to achieve Kolinahr? "You bastard, vy yu cheat us? Ve veere the laughing stock ov all ov Vulcan"

T'Pau: "Vhe Vulcans let bygones be bygones. But vhen Mac-Coy comes back for a visit, vhe vill cut him."

Kirk went to T'Pau complaining about going bald. Her response?

"De hair is de hair. Vhat can be done?"

I doubt they would be pissed. T'Pring is satisfied at how it went, the Federation (and Kirk) are glad to have Spock alive and on duty (and the Federation is therefore not pissed at Vulcan nor does Vulcan have to explain the embarrassing circumstances had Spock or Kirk died) and neither Kirk, McCoy or Spock were the type who would be trumpeting the circumstances to all and sundry.

Now if they were ROMULANS instead of Vulcans, there would have been some silent revenge taken at a future date.

Yeah, I think the important thing was that the forms were satisfied. People showed up at the appointed time and place, and took the expected actions in the prescribed order. Vulcans being eminently practical in most things, when all was said and done, the lack of an actual dead person would be a mere detail.

Fortunately for our heroes, such was not the case. ;)
