Why These Five? (Spoilers up to "316")

This thread contains spoilers up to "316."
So if you haven't seen season 5, you probably shouldn't be reading this!

So, this whole "getting back to the island" thing has many questions surrounding it. One thing that I keep wondering is why it only seemed necessary for Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Jack, and Sun to return.

Why not Aaron? He left at the same time as them and was in the plane crash just like the rest.

Why not Walt? For that matter, why didn't the time flashes start when Walt and Michael left? You would think that it would have occured if any of the flight 815 passengers left the island, but obviously this is not so.

Did Ben need to go back, or is he just tagging along because he can't stand to be away from the island?

Does Desmond need to go back? Apparently the island isn't done with him, but does he have anything to do with the time flashes or is he needed for other purposes?

So really, the big question is why those 5 are so important.

Any theories, suggestions, questions, thoughts, go ahead and post them here!

My guess is the Oceanic 6 needed to come back, including Aaron. Not Walt though, because he left via other means, and perhaps the Island excused his absence.

The only thing that makes me question if Aaron was really needed or not though is Clair coming back to Kate and telling her not to bring him. If Clair went with Christian/Jacob whatever, who knows, maybe she has insight now and knew the Island did not need Aaron to return for some reason, so then only the 5 remain.

Demsond, he also came to the island and left via other means, so perhaps the Island isn't done with him yet, but it doesn't need him there right now.

About the flashing, I was unclear if when Locke moved the wheel back in place if THAT stopped the flashing, or if the flashing would only stop if everyone returned.

So many questions really

Another question I have is, now that those 5 have returned, will the flashing even stop? Maybe it will slow down but not stop completely, or some other unknown thing will happen.

Also, what if the flashes stop, but they are in the wrong time period?

When I saw Jin in the Dharma uniform, my first idea was that they were in the 70s and Jin had been captured by some Dharma people, but was able to escape by stealing one of their uniforms and was driving off into the jungle as fast as he could to get away (and had the gun to protect himself if they caught him).

So if they really are in the 70s, or another time in the past, will they be stuck there forever??

I got the impression that maybe Jin was WORKING for Dharma. Perhaps when Locke moved the wheel back in place they flashed to the 70's (that van looked new) and they have been there for a while, and actually ended up getting jobs at Dharma to fit in on the island and learn more about it. This would explain why we saw Faraday in The Orchid with Dharma when that was being constructed.

Of course not. If they're in the 1970s, they're only stuck there until 1980. Duh. :p (Sorry, couldn't help myself.)

No, seriously, the show just hasn't given us enough info to answer your questions yet. My guess is that Locke leaving trapped them in the 1970s, and the O6 have to come back to bring them back the present.....or, something like that. We can only make wild guesses at this point.

I have a feeling Aaron will somehow be exempt. Maybe kids can leave the island or something like that? We're still not sure why the Oceanic 6 (-1) need to go back, so maybe once that is answered, it will shed some light on it.

Mrs. Hawkings said that if they all didn't return the results could be "unpredictable".

So I guess that means if they all went (including Aaron, Desmond, etc...) then things would have went perfectly, but since they didn't all go, now things might be... off.

Maybe they ended up in the wrong time period? Maybe they are all split up across time (Jack, Hurley & Kate in the 70's, Ben, Sayid & Sun in the 2000's, etc...). A lot of other things could have gone wrong because they all didn't go back at the same time.

That's why Hawkings wanted them all to go at the same time, to make sure things went correctly, but of course they didn't, cause where would the fun be in that?

The episode that aired last night made things even more confusing for the Walt situation. It seems like Locke went to Walt for the purpose of recruiting him to come back (though he decided against asking). If so, this episode seems to be implying that Walt is also needed to go back. Very interesting...

I think the simple answer is, the more people who go back, the better the chances of it working. You don't need everyone, it would just be kinda nice.

Unless the Island really does need all of themf or some kind of electro magnetic reasons.

Well, Ben did not disappear in a flash on the plane, he just crashed with all of the other Ajira survivors. So I am guessing that he is not one of the needed ones. I think he came along just because he is obsessed with the island. Dude needs a life.

I don't think that is the case, because Locke also didn't disappear with the rest and we know he is necessary.

I think that because they all didn't go back that things got messed up so some of them ended up in different times.

Locke, Ben, Frank & maybe Sun ended up with the plane.

Kate, Jack & Hurley ended up in the past (70's?)

Sayid, well, we don't know where he ended up yet, obviously not with the plane.
