Babylon 5 Script Book Project to be Revealed !

glindros

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Wondering what the new books from the script team are about?
Find out March 4th at 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific on the Babylon Podcast live feed.

Though a special arrangement with Captain Jacyln and the scripts team, Tim and Summer will be getting advanced copies of the book. They will announce the book and talk about some of its contents during the live feed.
Come and join us for the reveal and all the regular Babylon 5 insanity.

How to listen to the Live Feed
First, you need an application that can connect to a streaming feed. WinAmp seems to be the app of choice for Windows, and iTunes or Quicktime seems to work best on the Mac. One app of choice for Linux users is Amarok (with the xine engine).

To connect to the live feed, you can point your favorite audio stream catcher at one of the following server feeds:
http://stream.farpointmedia.net:8000/listen.pls (USA)
http://w2k.myftp.org:8000/FPM.m3u (Europe)

Tune in on Wednesday, find out what the new script books are all about, then join us in the chat room to discuss amongst other B5 fans and listeners!

The Babylon Podcast is a weekly podcast about Babylon 5. The hosts are Summer, Tim, and Jeffrey Willerth (Kosh).

They talk about all things Babylon 5, from episode discussions, to cast and crew interviews,to upcoming and past published books, to last years demise of Zima. It's a lot fun. Even if you're not well versed in podcasts, you can go to their website www.BabylonPodcast.com and you can listen to one of the shows right there.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who found this thread to be frustratingly vague.

Didn't JMS already release a series of overpriced script doodles to his cult of fanboys with too much disposable income?

Didn't JMS already release a series of overpriced script doodles to his cult of fanboys with too much disposable income?

Nope.

As to the podcasts, I'm not sure where the vagueness is perceived. Podcasts have been quite common for quite sometime, used on a variety of entertainment venues such as sports shows, editorials, other science fiction shows. glindros has briefly explained the purpose of the B5 podcasts.

As to the Script Team, Jan can best describe who these people are and their responsibilities. There have been plenty of threads over the past couple of years describing the books and to a lesser extent who are the people involved. In a nutshell, they have been a group of people responsible for collecting and editing the various offerings in these series of books. Everything from the various drafts of scripts for each episode to the essays and additional documentation provided.

Vague? I can only assume you have not been paying attention.

Three years ago, the scripts from Babylon 5 were released, with 6-7 scripts at a time in book form. Each volume also included previously-unseen pictures from the set, production memos, and an essay for each episode, written by JMS. There were 14 volumes in that series. A 15th volume was released and given away for free to the people who had purchased all 14 volumes.

A second release, called "Other Voices" included all 18 scripts written by those other than JMS, and included not only new essays, but fan-submitted questions for the writers. I'm happy to say, Mrs. JMS answered several of the questions I asked. Go me! :)

It was announced from the very beginning that once volume 14 had been released, there would be a window of, I believe, 30 days. After that 30 days, the series would go off sale forever. JMS has held true to his word. The books are no longer available.

The scripts team includes Jaclyn, Jason, and our own loverly Jan. They work with JMS to get the books out, do all the editing, track down things from long-forgotten files, etc.

Recently, the TV Movies volume was released. It includes four of the movies, including The Lost Tales (with the "lost" Garibaldi episode), and Q&A from fans.

There is also (finally) the quote book, But In Purple, I'm Stunning, and the chronology.

As for what these 7 to-be-announced books are? No idea yet. Well, I have had some ideas, but I've dismissed each one for one reason or another. We'll find out on Wednesday.

There is also (finally) the quote book, But In Purple, I'm Stunning, and the chronology.

I wasn't particularly crazy about the organization of that one. Maybe I missed it, but two or three quotations I was particularly looking for didn't seem to be in it.

(e.g., Delenn's line something to the effect that "Only one Earth captain has ever destroyed a Minbari warship. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, BE SOMEWHERE ELSE." Another was Ivanova's "I am the hand of God" speech.)

Another frustration was that much of the material wasn't "quotation" per se but whole snippets of dialogue back and forth. That's not a quote, that's a skit.

And what is "the script team?"

Neroon and OmahaStar have explained things pretty well but here's a little more detail.

The Scripts Team is a flexible team of people responsible for getting the Script Books compiled and the customers taken care of (over and above CafePress' excellent service). Some of the regular members are:

Capt. Jaclyn Easton - publisher, marketer, head of Customer Service (which is legendary) and herder of cats (aka the rest of the team). Chances are good these days that if you write to Help@babylon5scripts.com with any questions or issues on the books you'll have Jaclyn's personal attention. Without Jaclyn, these books would probably never have happened.

Jan (me) - fact checker, compiler of the Joe Cuts (a table of differences between the Script Book script drafts and the DVDs which caused JMS to declare me insane-in a good way), back-up Customer Service rep, occassional editor and compiler of goodies not yet announced. And "other duties as prescribed by management." ;)

Jason - editor, proofreader and compiler of goodies not yet announced.

Amy - editor, proofreader and another compiler of goodies.

Others - when called for, we've got a number of fans that we've gathered that are our 'Fan Board' who give input on various questions. One of the main things they helped with was making the Proof-of-Purchase process for the free Volume 15 completely painless and as foolproof as possible. Another task was to review the questions submitted by fans for some of the Other Voices scripts (hat tip to Omaha) and the recent Movie Book.

The Delenn quote was definitely in there. As I recall, JMS has said that it's far and away the most popular quote of all. I'd have to look to see if the Ivanova quote is in there.

Something that perhaps wasn't made as clear as might have been was that the quotes in "But in Purple..." were submitted by the fans. The idea for the book began in (iirc) 2002 or 2003 and JMS called for submissions from the fans for their favorite quotes. Various factors kept it from being published for a long time but it was those same fan submissions that were used to make up the book.

I, too, would have kind of enjoyed a more comprehensive volume.

Stop being silly Neroon - we all know what podcasts are and most people have heard of the script project. I think the problem here was, the OP comes in and asks why we are all apparently wondering about a new project that hardly anybody knew was happening. It actually screamed "subversive advertising ploy" to me with the implied knowledge that you KNEW something was happening and if you DIDN'T you must be a rube, because EVERYBODY else knows, so why don't YOU?!?!

Fact is, people were just expressing their confusion at the vagueness of this grand new epic project........of which they knew very little,

I assure you that there was no subversive advertising motive behind Glindros' post. I think he copied a post from the Podcast site not realizing how it would be percieved here. Podcast listeners are wondering about the new project because when the Movie Book came out last month Jason and I were guests on the podcast and we announced that there would be a book a month coming out for the next several months but that we couldn't discuss exactly what they were (are...will be) yet. This coming Wednesday when they record the Podcast people will be able to listen in via the Live Feed.

I'm sure that there was no intention to be vague on Glindros' part.

Jan

Omaha, dear...behave! Let me rephrase....I know that Glindros wasn't engaged in a subversive marketing ploy because the only marketer on the team is Captain Jaclyn. Any time she's let given me leave to spread the word about something I've always made it clear that she did. Glindros had told me that he was planning to spread the word about the podcast announcement but it's not something that he was doing to be subversive.

Jan

Subversive marketing? me?
I was just sharing what little information I have with others who might be interested. I don't work for either the podcast or the Script book people. And as far as knowing anything about the upcoming items, I am completely in the dark, although not for lack of trying.

Oh cool it. The games being played are what's silly, not me. Everybody cool down and take it for what it's worth. glindros was being helpful in letting anyone who might be interested in knowing what was coming up. It's no different than someone posting a thread regarding the earlier books, or a podcast about nuBSG episodes, etc. There is no need for the suspiciousness or the cynicism.

That stuff stops now.

I take the fact that I can't think of any future books worth owning as what little solace my pocketbook can salvage at this point. But I've been wrong before.
