What should change about the possible new Star Trek Experience?

Any news on returning characters to wander said restaurant, shops and museum?

A few have moved on or are unaccounted for, at least a few others are interested in returning if asked and if the circumstances are right, and rumor has it they'll be offered "first dibs" on the jobs. I know some of the bar staff are also eager to come back. I wouldn't be surprised to see familiar faces once May comes 'round, but I don't want to speak for them.

^That would be cool. I only spent a few days at the old Experience but the bartender Darren was a great guy. I hope to see him at the new location.

I speak with Darren from tie to time and he very much hopes to return to Quark's. In the meantime, check out Trekcast, the podcast he co-hosts, at Trekcast.com, or search iTunes for Trekcast.

^ I'll second the pimping for TrekCast. Darren contacted me about it a couple of months or so ago and I've been listening every week since then. They have a lot of fun, and the interviews with folks from the Experience are also kinda neat.

just the restaurant, bar, and a shop to begin with. the rest will be finished by some time in 2010. Happy days!!!

Per Creation Entertainment:

"Today brings lots of great news for our fellow Star Trek fans.... With a little more than two months to go to the release of the eagerly awaiting STAR TREK feature film, we are happy to announce that CBS/Paramount has announced that a contract has been signed to reopen STAR TREK: THE EXPERIENCE in Las Vegas! They are hoping for a May 8 launch starting with the restaurant and retail shop to coincide with the opening of the new film. If all goes well this means that we can potentially do our two big parties at STAR TREK: THE EXPERIENCE depending on the progress of the building."

Yes!

1. Three interactive rides: A post-NEM TNG one, a VOY one, and an STXI one.
2. Two restaurants: Quark's and a TOS-themed cafeteria that is more family-friendly.
3. Two theatres: One IMAX showing all 12 movies in rotation and a smaller one showing episodes from all 6 series. Both ENT-themed
4. Shops with everything Trek cheap to expensive.
5. A museum with props, models, costumes, etc.

I'm never quite sure what people mean when they say more family-friendly. Quark's always had families in there with children of every age. There was also the Federation side of the restaurant, too, which had any number of children present. This Federation side, in a new venue could be a more TOS themed part of the restaurant or as some others have mentioned, something that looks more like Ten-forward.

My guess is that the current owners will try to duplicate what already existed in the old venue but with technology updates (and in the case of the Klingon Encounter, an updated film). The reasons for this are that the set pieces already exist so that would be a way to cut expenses. If this new Experience takes off, I'm sure we can expect add-ons. Again, to cut costs, importing part of the Exhibition makes sense to me. We'll see.

Yes!

Been wondering what Creation is going to do after this year. As far as I know, they're only contracted through this year with the Hilton, but I could be wrong about that. I wonder if they'd move the convention to a suitable location closer to the Experience. I would think this to be advantageous and allow them to have more co-branded events, like the parties, with ease.

If Creation's smart, I would think they'd centralize everything. And in the end, I'm sure they can find an eager downtown location that would bend over backwards to make it work.

^^^ Those are my thoughts as well. Fremont Street, it seems, would love to have us and would value us the way the new LV Hilton management seems incapable of doing. I think their willingness to accomodate us by recreating STTE should be rewarded.

I am planning to attend a mass Vegas-area fan/STTE refugee viewing of the new film (Darren benjamin is planning this) at the Palms at midnight 050809. I have a choice between staying at the Palms to make that viewing convenient or staying at a hotel adjacent to Neonopolis and the new STTE. I'm leaning heavily toward staying on Fremont Street.

As an aside, do any Vegas locals (or former locals... looking at you, Biggshow) know which hotel is actually physically closest to the new STTE location?

Wherever I choose to stay on Fremont Street, I'm gonna make damned good and sure they know what brought me to town and that I will be back... often!

Fitzgerald's May be the closest but The Golden Nugget apparently just had a major remodel recently. The great thing about Fremont Street is that there are a number of hotels in the area and all are within walking distance of Neonopolis. As opposed to the Strip, downtown blocks are like any other city's blocks, fairly small.

The ideal STTE for me would be incredibly expensive to create. But if you’re gonna do it and have the space, why not truly make it The World of Star Trek? Have it cover every incarnation of Trek, with you feeling like you walked into the ST Universe as soon as you entered the place.

Walk in through the hanger deck or the transporter from TOS and out into the corridors. Take a turbolift to the TNG bridge and have your picture taken in the Big Chair. Go to Ten Forward for drinks or to Quarks for dinner, with promenade shopping. Go visit the Voyager Engineering section before talking one of Captain Archer’s shuttlepods to a 4D ride. From there, go to the TOS movie era version of Starfleet HQ for the real Star Trek museum, complete with section on the animated series.

Later, cruise the nightlife at Vic Fonatines, or see a film at the Guardian of Forever Multiplex Theater (every screen is shaped like the Guardian). Play a few round of Dabo or darts. If you are over 18 and have the credits, take a Dabo Girl (or guy) to the Holosuite. What happens at Quarks stays at Quarks.

There would be a child care center with kid-type Trek stuff and lots of tribbles. Oops, did little Johnny fall down and cut his knee? Take him to sick bay (TOS style) and one of the cranky doctors or short skirted nurses will help.

Want daytime fun for the adults? Three areas are section off: Risa, Wrigley’s Pleasure Planet and Alice’s Shore Leave Wonderland.

Want fun and excitement of a first contact mission gone bad? Wanna kill some Klingon bastards? Go to Star Trek Phaser Tag. You can choose which era you want to be part of.

Finally, on the way out, visit the Star Trek Hall of Fame and see remembrances of all your favorite characters and actors. Then take a Shuttlecraft modeled bus back to your hotel.

Well now we have the opening date confirmed is time to start speculating about what WILL change about the experience. It seems fairly certain that Quarks will come back, but i really believe that a lot has not yet been decided and will be dependent upon the new film.

thats not to say the place will be heavily based on the film. more that, if the film draws interest from the masses into trek. whoever is running this place will be more likely to spend big on it, so lets hope this film is a big success.

in terms of what they could do, they do have more than enough space to fit everything in from before and more. The original experience was fit into a space of roughly 65,000 square feet, and neonopolis has in total around 235,000 square feet. i do love the imax idea from earlier about it continually showing the movies on a cycle. has anyone heard anything yet on whether any of the actors or staff will be back? surely Darren must be going back?!?

thoughts anyone?

Some people have moved on, some (like Darren and Jeef) are waiting for the call and some are waiting for the call to see if STTE-A will fit into their new life. Go to Trekcast.com to hear interviews with some former alien ambassadors.

Whatever they do, I hope they don't make the same mistake the original Experience did, which was to make a couple of 4D rides and then sit back and wait for the money. There needs to be constant change and programming.

I anticipate the new Experience will be an initial success. There is no group more grateful than Trek fans given something they lost back to them. Just on that alone, initial attendence will be impressive.

But after that wave of uphoria, things will start to slow. If the new showrunners want fans to continue to come back year after year (and not just the super hardcore Trekkies), then they need to change up the attractions every couple of years. Give us something new to see so we schedule trips more often. The mere fact that they have more square footage will make this easier than the strict confines of a hotel.

Variety is the key word. Not just interactive rides; those get dull, annoying or merely nauseating. Special museum exhibits, Trekucational shows, and periodic Star Trek film festivals would be nice. I would love to be able to see the Trek movies back on the big screen, know where they are and have a larger distination to spend time in in addition to just seeing the movies.

What I would love to see is (as I and others have suggested) a real trek museum. But, at the proper points in each series' run, have a life sized figure (wax or photo) of the people in charge. Roddenberry first, then Solow, Justman, Coon, all of the people who made a lasting difference to Trek. Give them their due (no matter which incanation of the show).

Those are some really great ideas. I think one of the reasons why they want to get the Borg Invasion up and running soon ("soon" being a relative term) is that that attraction has the most flexibility in being able to use that room for things other than the Borg Invasion. 50+ people could hold a meeting/watch another movie in that space. It would also reqire the least amount of set dressing change to turn it into another adventure. One of the things about setting up an attraction using TOS bridge would be figuring out how to stay faithful to the dimensions of TOS bridge and still fit 27 or so people in there safely. A happy accident of TNG bridge is that only the back area needed to be slightly expanded to provide that space.

My ST wet dream would be to have a couple of TOS or movie era bridges that could be rented by small groups and used as battle simulators. So built on a gimble, insurance waivers signed (or insurance included as part of the price) and overseen by a control room operator who could tailor it to the skills of the "cadets" or to their specifications. For instance, when I worked as a lead at the Experience, the techs were trying to figure out a way to hook up the "Starfleet Academy" computer game onto one of our bridges with some kind of touch screen controls on the various consoles or at least the captain's chair. Obviously it never happened due to technical difficulties. Figuring that out ahead of time and implementing it would be very cool.

I think the good thing about opening up STTE-A in stages is that it allows for tech updates and the possibilty of new attractions on a fairly regular basis.
