^ hotlinking from sites that you don't own or are not specifically designed to host images for you isn't allowed.

So I've changed it to a normal link.

Yes, that's the preliminary sketch by the artist who's designing the Aventine for Pocket Books, to be used on the cover of a 2010 novel. I believe it was posted on Trekmovie at some point, and it's the only picture of the Aventine (or an approximation thereof) that's currently available to the public.

That was the same shot I saw on TrekMovie. At least it looks just like it.

It is indeed the same image. Only 2 images of the Aventine are online yet, the other one is showing a closeup of a couple of windows. I hope to have an update soon, but dont pin me down on it.

I for now have started a poll to figure out what kind of color scheme would be prefered, you can vote for it here

I did not realize you were the designer. Nice!

Just put in my vote, which seems no one else is very interested in doing that color verison. :(

Very nice design. I suspect a lot of gamers and fan fic writers will want to get their hands on her when she's done.

I like that it looks like the design of the latest ships, the Sovereign and Prometheus classes.

LightningStorm -- Sorry, about that, I'll remember that in the future.

Clawhammer -- I can't wait to see the finished ship, the sketch looked really nice and I think it fits perfectly. I'm in the middle of Lost Souls now so I had been looking around for what the Aventine looked like.

Glad to see that the results came in finally and that Mark is using both colors of the classes. Should be very interesting to see once its up. Just patiently waiting for it. :)

Seconded.. I find the thought of a Slipstream ship as historical and exciting as the idea of the NX 01.

And what ive seen of it so far I REALLY like.

I'm looking forward to seeing the final version myself.

For some reason when I was reading the books, in spite of everything, I kept picturing something like the Defiant except bigger and with longer, underslung pods. Not sure why.

I had always imagined she'd look more like the Dauntless than she does.

Not like that's a bad thing, of course. I get a happy Dauntless/Enterprise-E/Voyager hybrid vibe from it.

You are aware Dauntless was in no shape of form a Starfleet vessel, yes it had a few design similarities (which are either coincidental or part of that Alien dudes plan to screw with Voyager) to a Starfleet starship but it was created by some random alien species from the Delta Quadrant.

And I must admit, that sketch does have a few similarities to Dauntless which along with armoured hull (yes I know Defiant has ablative hull armour, but it's not that different from the normal hull) is worrying for me.

I am, indeed. ;) However, Voyager apparently took extensive readings on the ship, and it seems only logical that Starfleet's first full-fledged attempt at quantum slipstream drive take lead from the design, with perhaps similar results.

I don't get the worry either?

Nailed it! These are exactly the 3 ships I have taken a good look at:

Voyager: A sturdy ship with some unique features. (Aux. deflector, moveable pylons.) The only canon link to quantum slipstream experiments as far as I know. It would be the best starting point.

Enterprise E: I looked at it for 2 reasons,
Size: The Enterprise is in the same size range as the Aventine, I never created such a large ship, so this was helpful. (I just could not make heads or tails from the window layout on the E-E, so I decided to go a more logical route there.)
Sleekness: Looking fast while standing still, I wanted some of that as well.

Dauntless: I had to look at this ship, because it was all about QSD. I can imagine Starfleet would use a lot of it's data gathered by the Voyager crew and put that into the Vesta class ships as well. Personally I find the sideview of the ship quite nice. But the mesh is just a bit too blobby for my liking.

Spirit: My own solo attempt to show a QSD testbed. For me it was clear I had to give the Aventine some features of the Spirit, so I attached a lot of sensor fins to the Aventine as well.

I had you there! No fins on the Aventine. :) They do both have curvy armor plating and a similar layout of the secondary hull. (In case of the Spirit, that is the primary+secondary hull.)

Anyway I finished the ship today, just in time for the shakedown tests...or actually my calendar deadline. The final image is currently rendering and will be ready in 14 hours or so. I have put 360 hours of my sparetime in it over the last 4 months. I demand Whisky! (Even if I dont drink.)

I'm planning on doing some tweaks around April. I want to create some animations, but I need to optimize the model for that.

I think an update is in order next week, so I will mail Margaret to "make it so". Thanks for all the support and feedback!

P.s. Dimesdan: IIRC "Particle synthesis" that's how the alien transformed his own ship to look and read like a Starfleet ship. Also in that same episode I believe that Voyager itself used QSD for a couple of hours till they could not keep the tunnel open anymore.

As for the armor: There is lots of it, but this isnt a Batmobile.
