DS9 Omnibus & TNG ebook question

JPW

Hello there, first off i am terribly sorry if these have already been asked, but i am incredibly dull witted and accident prone. Anyway, here goes:

1) Does anyone know if Pocket are planning further collections following on from 'Twist of Faith' and 'These Haunted Seas'? I bought both of these and cannot get enough. It seems finding the original releases will be difficult, so further compilations would be greatly appreciated.

2) I remembered recently there were two ebook series which piqued my interest, 'Mere Anarchy' and 'Slings and Arrows'. To my delight, the first has a trade paperback release, but the latter seems to have vanished into the mists of time. Since i can't stand reading for a great deal of time from a computer, i was wondering whether 'Slings and Arrows' will be published in trade paperback?

Thank you for taking the time to read my questions, and again apologies if these have already been asked,

JPW

Given Slings and Arrows just came out in 2007-08, I'd wager we'll have to wait a little longer for a paper reprint. Mere Anarchy came out in 2006-07, and is just getting its reprint now in 2009.

It was mentioned last year that Twist of Faith didn't sell as well as had been expected, and early indications were that These Haunted Seas would have similar problems, so unfortunately no further collected editions are likely.

Damnit. I am finding the second two Mission Gamma books shockingly difficult to find even second hand, and on the odd occasion I do find them online, they are much too expensive for me.

You're about the 12th person to have this complaint on here in the last few months; it definitely sucks. My only suggestion for cost-effectiveness would be to get them as eBooks and read them on your computer, but I know how much of a pain in the ass that is, too.

Oh well.

Maybe if we get a petition signed to release the other two Mission Gamma as an omnibus...
Really, no. The beancounters at S&S have their hard and fast data on how the first two DS9 omnibii sold; a couple hundred emails isn't going to trump that.

The best to possibly hope for, IMHO, is that now that the omni plans have fallen by the wayside, they'll decide to do a new printing on the mass markets. (And if these dealers really are getting people paying double the cover price for second-hand copies, that seems like a bit of a no-brainer to me.)

Not to mention, with the recent layoff of Marco, I highly doubt they'll be doing any projects that could be considered extraneous.

I am hoping for a new printing, though.

Had I known this earlier, I would never have bought These Haunted Seas. :(

A petition to re-release two titles that will, on recent trends, make a loss for Pocket?

Well, you also could have been buying "Mission Gamma" when they came out in MMPB. The main reason an omnibus came out was because Book 1 had been out of print for a long time, and demand was there for a reprint. The other three books were produced in larger numbers due to excellent pre-orders and good reviews on Book 1.

All four MMPBs are still sitting on some Australian bookshelves, though. If you keep hunting, second hand copies are also out there.

Hmm, I dont really like reading books on the pc, so I guess I shall just keep scouring eBay!

Wish they were in the UK, I never see hide nor hair of them here. I've spotted them on online sources now and again, but even at the cheapest I have seen them, if I buy both and factor in postage, they came to nearly £40. And I am not paying that much for second hand paper backs.

Where in the UK are you? If you're near London try out Forbidden Planet on Shaftesbury Avenue as last time I was there (admittedly back in October) they had a couple of copies of all four of them.

Same here in Sydney. Still at retail (although essentially double US price) and sitting warming shelves. At least one of each in numerous shops. But amazing to see "Twilight" (Book 1) was going for about $70 on Amazon second hand markets before the omnibus became available. As I said, Pocket increased the production run for Books 2, 3 and 4 to meet bookshop pre-orders. So they are are easier to find than "Twilight".

I live in Manchester, I'll just have to keep an eye open when I venture further afield.

Try FP's website - you may be able to order through there

isn't there a Forbidden Planet "Megastore" in Manchester? I know neither are local, but there's one in Birmingham and one in Bristol and just a normal "smallish" one in Stoke on Trent.

Either that, or just ask at your local Waterstones, Borders or if you have a independent book shop, or, maybe a charity shop as recently I've got some decent bargains on used books.

Hi, thanks. Yeah, I've checked both websites, the .co.uk and .com, neither have them. I'll get them off ebay eventually I'm sure, I was really just commenting on how a third omnibus with them in would have been good as these two seem to be very hard to find.

That there is, I used to go most weeks for my comics! Until I realised the Travelling Man around the corner was cheaper :) It has two floors, so I suppose it could graciously be described as a "Megastore", but it's not huge. anyway, I shall just keep looking whenever I spot a shop that sells books.

Ironically, people used to come here saying that Book 1 was out of print and stores were flooded with Books 2-4, and they refused to buy those until they could get Book 1. Then people reported that Book 2 was getting rare. Then the first MG omnibus came out and the shelf stocks of 3 and 4 were snapped up.

Reprints are dependent on shops placing requests with warehouses, and when the requested book is out of print, the message eventually filters back to the publisher that a reprint might be viable.

Pocket is unlikely to be able to resist satisfying customers for too long. It's an unfinished story arc; people might still want Books 3 and 4, but those titles were definitely published in higher numbers than Book 1, due to the high demand for the first one.

The best strategy is to place an order with a bookshop. Have you confirmed they're definitely, officially, out-of-print?
