Casting Rumors

I remember reading, early on, that Richard Dean Anderson--James Earl Jones and Tony Todd were all considered to play Sisko. Are there more casting rumors out there besides these and Ro Laren coming to the show? Or is that it???

If what you're saying is true, I'm so glad Richard Dean Anderson and James Earl Jones weren't chosen. It's better to cast an unknown, so that we aren't always just thinking of another famous character played by the actor during their performance. It would be really weird to see Darth Vader of Mcgyver giving orders on a Star Trek space station. :)

Emphasis mine

I'm not sure about Sisko, but I recall reading something that James Earl Jones was considered (or short listed) for the part of Jeffery Sinclair on Babylon 5. Now I'm not 100 % on that, so take it with a grain of salt. Unless our resident Vorlon-in-training Jan is around...

Let me state here that I am in total support of Avery Brooks. I wont deny that I thought he got off to a rocky start, no doubt because Berman was making him be the "Black Picard"....but Avery grew into the role.

Tony Todd, I think, would have been great too. That dude has never let me down...

I agree about Tony Todd. I loved his acting as both Kurn and Jake Sisko and he is hilarious in "The Rock". I want to see more movies he's in. It's funny how you compare Sisko to Picard, as I feel he's more like Kirk, except A LOT more hot-tempered and less casual with his staff than Kirk tended to be. I also think he has a very mannered way of speaking, which makes him similar to Shatner. He was very entertaining and often endearing in the role, but I don't think his acting was quite up to the standard of Patrick Stewart's...especially in the scenes that called for him to be REALLY intense like the end of "Far Beyond the Stars" where he was WAY too theatrical and over-the-top.

I don't know about this, James Earl Jones has been awesome in everything he's done, I've never really had an issue with the whole Darth Vader thing. Although, I would have loved to hear "This is DS9" in that booming voice.

RDA - I never confused Jack O'Neill with MacGyver and I love both shows. Maybe if O'Neill had a mullet or something...

Siddig El Fiedel/Alexander Siddig (I know I probably spelled that wrong) was on the short list for Sisko, but Berman thought him too young and asked him to be Bashir. I read that in the CD Rom version of the Companion.

But you had no problems with Hawk, who more than a few people strongly associated Brooks with?

He probably never saw Hawk or Spenser for Hire, I was only like 6 years old when those shows finished their first run. Not even sure if they were shown on TV over here, so I had no idea Brooks had a career before DS9 when it started.

I wouldn't call Avery Brooks an unknown, he had a supporting role on Spencer for Hire, and that was spun off in to his own series 'Hawk' if I recall.

Yeah, DS9 was one of the only things I've seen Avery Brooks in. I don't think he's as good of an actor as Patrick Stewart or as endlessly appealing and endearing as Shatner, but I think it's a shame he hasn't done more high profile film and TV work in his career. Other than Deep Space Nine, I've only seen him in those two movies that came out around the end of the series - The Big Hit and American History X (both of which I saw before DS9). He was great in both, but those roles were like glorified cameos.

Back to the original question, there's always the one about Famke Janssen as Jadiza.

And I think Andy Robinson was the first choice for Odo.

Wow, am I glad that didn't happen. I loved her performance in "The Perfect Mate" and she's a big reason why "X2" is my favourite superhero movie, but Terry Farrell was MAGIC in that role. My favourite female Star Trek character ever, thanks to her considerable charm in the role.

NOT quite they offered a spot in the show as Kamala her character in the TNG episode #121?
The Perfect Mate
BUT she wanted to do Movies and turned down the offer that's when the producers had to create Jadiza.
That is also a factor I guess as to why the character of Jadzia Dax was the last to be cast

Aw, what's with the Terry hate on this site? :( I thought she was adorable. I really enjoyed her enthusiasm, confidence, and toughness and thought some of the most interesting episodes were ones that explored the issues she had to deal with as a Trill (i.e. "Rejoined", "Facets").
