The New Enterprise in 3D! ... NOW FINISHED (threads merged)

Yeah a link would be cool as I wouldn't mind messing around with your Enterprise. On a side note do you know when ether yourself or Tobias Richter will be releasing the blender conversion of the Kelvin.

Possibly bright green glowing dots hidden within those little indentures forward of the nacelles would add a nice effect, also in the rear exhaust ports. Or possibly cyan to match the colour of the glowy parts seen in (if I'm not mistaken) ST 6

If you are to add any window textures in small areas, I would suggest a sharp edged triangular shape...seems more klingon. I would also love a link to your finished models, and if you can kindly inform the most likely blind, what program do you use?
Yep, I plan to have all kinds of glowing things hidden away in most of these recessed areas. :)

I really need to have myself a website, so that I can have a gallery of stuff that I've finished. I'll work on that. :)

I use Blender, version 2.45. I didn't like the newer version. They changed around most of the keyboard shortcuts, and I found it irritating. :)

Hmm, I didn't ask him permission yet to release it, just to convert it. I'll ask, and see what he says. :)

I might also package up my enterprise, and release it, also. :)

I don't think you'll have any problems with permission as Tobias already gave permission for a Lightwave conversion of the model that's available in Scifi-meshes download section. The only problem is I use Max & Milkshape which nether will accept the model for various reasons, so with blender been free I'll be able to view his great work & see how a pro dealt with the same model.

You know, that annoyed the crap out of me. I worked in Blender briefly, then this computer fritzed and I didn't reinstall for a while. Then, when I did, it was the new version and everything seemed different and I thought I'd gone crazy.

I know, I've had problems upgrading, and having things ending up weird. It all works ok, in 2.45, so I stick with that. I imagine I will use it until it stops working. :)

I've nearly got TobiasRichter's Kelvin all imported, textured, and lit up.

Blender surprised me, as well as this looks. :)

I'm playing with the LW-conversion of that model at the moment :)

Cool. :)

Did you texture all the stuff inside the seconday hull?

I notice he has rooms and stuff in there, and I think he has an entire shuttlebay modeled. I didn't mess with any of that, though.

I wish Blender would do lens flares and stuff like that. I add all that in photoshop, later. :)

Well, the version I have doesn't have a shuttle bay interior. But this conversion was made before he revised the deflector and added the rcs-thrusters, so...

Oh, ok. I just got the .obj from him last week. :)

You are a lucky guy.

I wouldn't even dare to ask him...

I'm sure he is very nice... maybe I will ask him for the obj-file :)

BTW: May I suggest something?

Your lighting (on the ship) is awfully flat. I would increase the strength of the main light-source and tone down the fill-lights (global illumination) considerably.

Look at the moon in your last render... the shadows on the ship should at least approach such dark levels ;) (I wouldn't turn them completely black but a very dark gray should do the trick. :)

Ah, I see what you are saying.

Lighting is the area where I need the most work.

Not busy at work today, so I've been playing...

I really like the idea behind the bottom image, but I don't think I realized it as well as I could. Has anyone seen an image with the same idea, but done better? I am sure something exists. :)

You are doing an excellent job here in rendering and compositing your shots. And the layout of the individual elements are terrific as well. However, I think more attention to lighting sources would perfect what you are doing.

For example, the Ent in the lower shot appears primarily lit from the top of the picture (based on the shadowing of the saucer) yet the moon clearly indicates that the primary light source should be coming from the lower right.

The upper picture has this disconnect as well (model from upper left, surface from lower right.)

And I agree with ST-One, don't be afraid to push the contrast on your ship's lighting; it can really sell the 3-dimensionality of the ship.

Heh, so here's a minor challenge for you, a Saladin that keeps FJ's concept, but with these parts.

Crap. I meant to work on that, but started rendering things before I noticed. :)

I'm going to update these tonight. :)
