Rapelay virtual rape game banned by Amazon

What is sold on Amazon? I've only ever bought books from them.
Lots and lots of things.

Do they sell hardcore pornography?
Yup.

BDSM paraphernalia?
I wouldn't know.

AO-rated games?
Yup.

Was this a game that was singled out after objections were raised, one of a class of games, or an oddity that wasn't in-line with existing policies?
I'm going to guess someone saw it, was offended, and whined.

Can't say I'm surprised that Amazon wouldn't stock such games, or that I object to their refusing to stock such games, it's certainly no more censorship than the MPAA is.
Some of us consider them to be censors because of the arbitrary ways they can assign ratings to movies.

I don't know how knee-jerk reactionary they are. After all they did change their Christmas sale to a Holiday sale due to public reaction and then changed it back to Christmas sale due to more public reaction. I think they are simply reacting to their customers in a, well, knee jerk, ah, way.
I guess you answered your own question. ;)

Everyone remembers Custer's revenge and it was offensive (though it's hard to compare an Atari 2600 game to anything with modern graphics).
The poor graphics are what make me find it amusing, personally.

Actually, I don't mean to single out Japan. I love Japanese culture and I've taken three years of Japanese language. My fiancee and I plan on living in Tokyo and I have friends who are Japanese; THEY definitely think the tentacle rape cartoons and prevalence of hentai is weird. What's even weirder is that the hentai stuff produced has such a large AMERICAN audience.
Where there's a market... Though to be honest I doubt that's really true since I've seen some ... really gross things, and they were all in their original Japanese.

I may be liberal, but these kinds of games sicken me. There's nothing amusing or entertaining about rape. I have no objection if it's shown in a movie or is in a book in the context of how awful it really is -- Oz certainly succeeded in that. Self-censorship is fine with me. Couldn't the programmers find something else to create? Geez. -- RR
Different strokes and all that.

People who would even consider buying this game, never mind playing it, need some serious help. What's next, targeting infants?

This game is disgusting, and the people involved with it should be made public so everyone know which sick fucks are making games where you rape someone as the goal. What's their next game? Raping children?

As far as pedophilia goes - pedophilia involves lusting after pre-pubescent girls. These girls all seem to have breasts. Also, as they are fictional and animated, I'm not sure it applies as child porn. Certainly doesn't in the United States.
Censorship proponents often bring up pedophilia and children in some way in order to justify their viewpoints - it's a strawman designed to end all dissenting views because everyone in their right mind opposes pedophilia and child pornography. Unfortunately for them, people like me see right through that, and frankly I find it appalling anyone would use children as a shield for themselves in that manner.

In much the same way as violent video games helped me vent frustration during school (so that I didn't explode and knife someone), maybe these games help potential sexual predators vent their desires in a safe manner.

If you truly and literally had that desire and the games gave you relief, you'll still do it eventually.

What about games like GTA or Crackdown?

I'm a fairly non-violent person, yet I play GTA and have a lot of fun blowing up helicopters with a missile launcher. Does that mean eventually I'm going to pick up a missile launcher and blow up the real thing?

While I find games like Rapelay abhorrent, that doesn't mean a person who plays it is going to go out and rape someone. 'Bolio makes a good point. How is this unacceptable, yet games like GTA sell faster than stores can supply them are considered normal?

Exactly. I've committed acts of violence in video games that would make the bloodiest tyrants in history piss themselves. Does that mean I'm more likely to do it for real? Of course not. Less so, in fact, since I have a harmless outlet for my pent-up aggression.

If mass murder, theft, terrorism, prostitution, drug smuggling, and a dozen other felonies are fair play in the video gaming world, there's no reason on Earth why rape and/or underage sex shouldn't be as well.

.

pookha backs away..

i have known a couple of rape victims.
one of whom went public about what happened to her in hope of helping other women to cope with the nightmare that happened to them.

for me i find the thing disgusting .
i also admit i would shy from being around someone who bought and got enjoyment from playing a game like this.

and i do see a difference between some of the shoot em up games like doom and something like playing the part of the rapist.

the involvement seems to be so more personal .. that one wouldnt have have an empathy to shoot an imaginary gun but to actually willingly play and enjoy playing a rapist./

just a little to creepy for my tastes.

You know, this thread does bring around an interesting question: Why is raping so much more terrible to "role play" than violence? I'm disgusted by the thought of a game about raping, and at the same time, I enjoy violent games. I enjoy games like Call of Duty where I kill enemies individually, and I'm a fan of games like Command and Conquer where I get to destroy hundreds of lives with the press of a single button. I think part of it is how much violence is infused into our lives and we are somewhat desensitised to it. It's everywhere on the TV and on the news, and it rarely phases us.

And I think entertainment reinforces the idea of rape is worse than murder. To use BSG as an example, Starbuck tortures a prisoner or Tigh beats a prisoner and they're just doing their jobs. However, the guy from Pegasus rapes a prisoner and he is an uber-bad guy!!! This definately is making me think a bit...

whats next? games featuring child porn?

Could do. SCOTUS quashed the Child Pornography Prevention Act relating to virtual depictions of child sexuality on First Amendment grounds a while back. Still leaves obscenity grounds though.

Constitutionally, I have no problem with virtual depictions of child porn. I'd also have no problems with Amazon not choosing to carry things that depict that.

Sometimes violence is justified or necessary. Rape never is; it's always a choice. That's the difference.

Agreed. And what gets me is that it's not just rape. There's also forced abortion and gang rape. And that qualifies as "entertainment" just how?

People crapping on each other or themselves seems to qualify as "entertainment". I personally find it gross, but I wouldn't be for banning that type of porn or a game along those lines - different strokes and all that. For me this is kind of the same thing, though it's either for someone who fantasizes, or someone with an extremely dark sense of humor. I don't know, I haven't played the game, so I can't really say one way or another since it's not my thing. But I do know both men and women who have such fantasies without ever for once considering doing it for real anymore than I'd want to run around killing people because I like playing Halo.

And most violent games, like Doom or Halo, depict killing as justified and necessary. Others like GTA, equally popular, allow the player to gleefully murder innocent people by the dozen.

There is a sense of escapism in GTA. Seriously they are a couple of pixel big. Whereas other games (manhunt I think). You actually take people and torture them. Disclaimer never played manhunt.

I think amazon did the right thing here. You know when something is wrong and this is one of the few cases where it is. Heck you can still buy Mien Kampf there. Where our Cdn retailer Chapters banned it all together.

I don't think it should be banned, I don't agree with censorship.

But if Amazon want to refuse to sell it or refuse to let their sellers provide it, that's fine with me. They are under no obligation to stock products they find offensive. It's not censorship, they are in no legal position to prevent it's sale at other outlets or demand the content be changed.

I think with violence you can at least say 'oh they are the bad guys and I'm the protector'. You can't have the same argument with rape. IMO.

It all boils down to a simple concept....

Fantasy.... Reality.... two separate things.

People who attack games, or movies, or tv shows, or books have a problem with that simple fact. They blur the lines either because they themselves can't tell the difference, or they have an agenda.

Or perhaps certain things shouldn't even be in ones fantasies, and when they are other people worry.
