I'm interested in seeing Tarantino's take on WWII, and it will probably be entertaining, but I'm not really entirely sure what to make of it yet.

And Brad Pitt is on some kind of roll here.

I'm not really entirely sure what to make of it yet.

He's taking everyone's expectations and exploding the living fuck out of them. Probably has something to do with the fact that our understanding of WWII has been filtered thru Hollywood anyway, so this is the anti-Spielberg approach, a kind of antidote.

And since my understanding of WWII is filtered at least partly through actual history books , this approach doesn't look the least bit invalid as a counterbalance. People have an incredibly sanitized view of history. Not that Tarantino gives a shit about "correcting" anyone's view of history - he's most likely just trying to stir up shit and have some fun.

Heh...looks like it's supposed to be the same guy! He was also in "CHiPs" and a movie called "Frankenstein's Great Aunt Tillie"! I gotta see him again in "Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood" first.

Bit torn, on the one hand I generally love 'men on a mission' films, but this looks bad, and they don't seem to have much of a mission except to raise hell...heck at least the Dirty Dozen had a specified target.

I'm hoping the basterds have personality at least (you'd imagine this given it's Tarantino--but from what little we saw they all look pretty generic except for Pitt)

They seem to have taken Hitler straight out of Allo Allo...

Remember kids, WW2 was fought and won entirley by Americans...

I never saw the 70's "Inglorious Bastards", which from what I understand isn't that related to this version...plotwise.

I generally dislike Brad Pitt, and have mixed feelings about Tarantino (he comes accross as a b-movie director who believes his own hype).

I rather think Tarantino is a B-Movie director who believes he's a B-Movie director and revels in it. All of his films have an odd sense of fun behind the almost cartoon violence and pop culture dialogue. The last thing he is is pretensious.

As for this film...well I can't see it going over well in Germany, but other than that it's refreshing to see a new perspective on that period in history. Speaking as someone who grew up on an army camp, I have no trouble beliving soldiers are capable, even eager to wage that brand or warfare.

I'm a massive fan of Tarantino, and I have all 5 DVD's he's written/directed and most of the stuff that he's had some form of collaboration (like Killing Zoe, True Romance etc), and when I first heard of Inglorious Basterds, which the rumours were going around at the time about a film called 'Vega Brothers' which he wanted to write I immediately told my brother in law (who is also a massive Tarantino fan) and we both intend to go to the day it comes out.

The trailer looks amazing and I for one am going to watch it.

And Starkers, as far as history goes, America didn't join WW2 until they got their ass handed to them.

I'm a bit torn on this movie too. It's like Nazi's have been downgraded to some sort of zombie attack and Pitt is the guy in charge of killing them all.

Fascinating insights, guys! They have absolutely nothing to do with the trailer, unless that small group of men claim to have brought down the Third Reich by themselves, but still, an amazing bit of history.

By all means, if someone should come along and argue these points with you, please continue, and if possible, bring up more films that have nothing to do with this one. 'U-571' would be a good starting point.

No it is not. The original is almost like the A-Team taking on a Nazi train.

I like Tarantino so this is a no-brainer for me. Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp are two mainstream stars who are always involved in very interesting projects and roles, I don't think anyone could accuse them of always taking the easy road.

You wouldn't think that as far as Hollywood goes...According to Hollywood WW2 ran from 1941 to 1945

Back to the topic at hand, can anyone shed more light on the plot of the film?

It's going to be interesting to see what kind of musical score Tarantino gives this. Lot's of Gracie Fields and the Anderson Sisters no doubt
