ENT's music...

Mott the barber

Hey guys. So I'm slowly making my way through Season 4 for the first time (besides TATVs which I've "unfortunately" already seen) and I can't help but notice that Ent., at least in its later seasons, really broke the mold started around season 5 of TNG on through the later series of extremely bland music overall. I just got finished with the Augment trilogy and the soundtrack was movie quality IMO. I haven't heard that kind of music in Trek since Ron Jones in Season 3 of TNG. Just an observation.

I tend to agree with you - I remember thinking this as I was watching that last season of Enterprise. I think they finally figured out that they need to give the composers some leeway aside from making them stick to sonic wallpaper.

I thought DS9 had some decent music at times, especially through the dominion war arc.

The music did got a little better, though I think the biggest change was Velton Ray Bunch joining the show. His music felt fresh and exciting. Chattaway also improved a little bit. Dennis McCarthy however remained essentialy the same. This when comparing to late DS9 and VOY seasons.
However this isn't bad because the music in later DS9 and Voy seasons was pratically already on Ent levels (minus Bunch). At least that's my impression from watching all the shows recently.

TNG's 5th Season was indeed the lowest point musically, but it started getting better and better from that momment on, with each season that passed.

Good point about the Dominion War arc. Forgot about that.

I thought the music got much better in season 2 and that continued into season 3. Season 4 I wasn't a fan of musically, it always came across as a little too synthesised.

Due to budget cuts in season 4 many of the scores were done with synthetizers instead of real orchestra...

Yeah, I thought that's what happened. I don't mind synthesisers when they make interesting electronic sounds, but when you use one to simulate a real instrument it never sounds right and comes off as cheap. They should have just gotten rid of Hoshi and Mayweather and used the money on a proper orchestra, it's not like as if anyone would notice they're gone. :p

After years of sonic wallpaper, it was great to hear unique, powerful scores again on Enterprise.

Silent Enemy
Regeneration
Canamar
Anomaly
Divergence

Some of my favourites.

Silent Enemy is definitely on my list of favourites for outstanding musical scores. I'd also have to put Fight or Flight, Regneration and Azati Prime's battle scene music up there too.

As much as I'm not fond of TATV, I did enjoy the music for the Enterprise speech/montage.

One bit of music that always stands out to me is Trip's escape scene in Terra Prime - more because of how unusual it was for standard Trek fare. I'm undecided whether it was good unusual or not :p

All in all, I thought Enterprise had pretty decent musical scores on the whole.

I liked Velton Ray Bunch's music for Enterprise, especially "Similitude" (Emmy winner), "Harbinger," and "Home." Dennis McCarthy's work in "Broken Bow," "Storm Front" and "Observer Effect" stood out for me too. I think "Archer's Theme" is lovely.

Me too. When I first saw that scene and heard what sounded like rock music, I thought maybe that was music they were pumping into the cell to drive Trip nuts. It was quite unlike anything in Trek I've heard before.

Well, except for Kirk and Spock's bus ride in Star Trek IV...one of the funniest scenes in all of Trek.
