Steven King slams Twilight

From everything I've heard, King's criticism is justified.

I've seen some excerpts from "Twilight" and they were pretty awful.

That said, King is not the writer he used to be, either.
 
The King is on target as usual. I like him even more for it and I already loved him. If anyone thinks he doesn't write as well as he did then go and pick up Duma Key then get back to me.

Exactly. If you don't want something, you dont ask for it. You also cant expect everything you want to turn out the way you want it to.

And what would you rather he of done? Lie? And if he did, is that anymore professional than the truth that was told in this case?

The problem is that in the last 20 years people have been trained to be concerned about someone's feelings. People can no longer handle criticism -- constructive or otherwise.

If you dont want your feelings to be hurt don't ask. And if you're to stupid to realize that then maybe you deserve it :P

I agree. Though there are really only a couple of his books I ever enjoyed, I do think he's the best popular writer, at least in the technical sense, of the last 25-30 years.

I think he's implying she's had a lot of help of which I am also very suspicious.
 
It's kind of like James Hetfield attacking The Jonas Brothers isn't it? Meyer's stuff is meant as a fantasy-romance for tweens. Twilight is like a teeny emo version of all those crappy books that have Fabio on the cover. Are any of those books considered to be good? Because I can't think of any. King is shooting fish in a barrel here. He might as well talk shit on The Hills or One Tree Hill. It's all the same thing really.

What I find more annoying is that she basicly ripped off Joss Whedon's best work and made a mediocre version of it that ended up being a thousand times more popular. She is to Joss Whedon what Stargate is to Farscape. Or what Carlos Mencia is to Richard Pryor. Or what Nickelback is to Good Music. If I were Jossy Poo I'd sue. Or at the very least, demand she start calling Bella and Edward by their real names of Buffy and Angel.

When you consider how much he writes, he's pretty damn amazing.

One thing that proves his talent to me is even though he prefers horror fiction, when he wants to do other genres, even non-fiction, he's usually top notch.

Definitely not a one trick pony.
 
What's also cool about King, though, is that when he writes horror he doesn't pull the "but I'm not really a horror writer" shit that some people do. He's an out and out horror writer and takes pride in that fact.

On a technical level, he no doubt writes better than he did back in the day; but he started out less than adequate, though compelling-- in true Pulp fashion. His content, though, has become tepid. He gained fame with an innovative, Postmodern approach (and I think he was also in the right place at the right time-- though I think there was some synergy there), which is no longer new. I feel that he's lacking inspiration and his career is fueled mostly by reputation.

See, I think he's better than ever now. I know I'm kind of in the minority on that one, though. Have you read Duma Key? If you haven't I'd give it a shot. It's horror but very moving as well. It's my favorite of King's books.
 
One thing I really dislike about what he's doing now though is "connecting" all of his books with the Dark Tower thing, even ones he wrote before it. I'm not a big fan of DT and it taints the other works, imo. Plus, it takes the mystery out of them. For instance, I don't need to know exactly who the monster from IT was.

To be fair, he actually began working on The Dark Tower long before he began working on anything else of his that's been published. He just didn't publish the first entry in that series until later.

I imagine they are saying he is old and also a poo poo head.

As for King, I respect his comments a hell of a lot more than I would if he gave a deflective statement like "I haven't read it," or "people say she's great."

No, but at least there is proof that he has some sort of talent. Id rather see the talent where out after writing for so long, rather than making it big on crap like Twilight has.

No. I just get PO'ed at people who belittle or try to de-legitimize other people's accomplishments.

Like I said, I think Rowling's first few HP books sucked. I also think she deserves a lot of credit for vastly maturing in her writing in later books. And I think it's both irrational and mean-spirited to try to claim that she didn't do it (especially since her writing style is quite distinct).
