Why DRM sucks Part 72824384 - "Gears of Wars" PC goes dark

Shoulda been playin it where it's meant to be played. :p

Epic claims that the reason GoW2 didn't get a PC release is because of rampant piracy of GoW1. Given the utter indifference with which the news was received by most PC gamers, though, I suspect it was more that the game itself didn't hold much appeal for them.

Yeah, I don't think PC Gamers really care about GOW all that much. It's pretty light fare for a PC shooter.

As far as PC shooters go, it's one of the few, and it's a rare few where I prefer using my 360 controller hooked up to my pc over a mouse and keyboard, I know, weird, go figure.

The "hack" is to just change the date of your system clock.

I'm trying to score a copy on eBay just for the achievements. Fun times.

DRM is a terrible idea. It punishes the majority of the people for the actions of a small percentage.

this is why I don't play PC games any more, after I lost my Monkey Island 2 password wheel...

I think it's more the fact that it was a console game being transplanted to the PC after the fact that made most of the difference, much like Supreme Commander on X360 which didn't receive one-tenth the attention it did on PC. Ditto MGS on Xbox, RE4 on PC, etc. Nobody likes being the second-string platform, and old games are old news.

Personally I think the PC gaming scene will get along just fine without the hollywood action titles and the developers that produce them.

But doing that counts as circumventing the DRM which is illegal under the DMCA. Isn't it great to PAY for the privilege of being a criminal?

I don't like DRM at all. Computers are supposed to make life easier, but like most modern ideas in computing it seems (some of which have made their way into other digital electronics), DRM has ended up more of a nuisance and hinderance than a benefit. I wouldn't buy anything that was DRM managed.

Portability is another thing that bugs me. Software should be portable. You should be able to copy a program directory onto another machine, or loaded onto a portable drive, and it should just work (hardware permitting). No system installation or restart needed.

I agree that for the most part DRM sucks, but there's no need to go overboard, Epic are already working on a fix and I doubt it'll be long.

Epic can go fuck themselves. That a fix is required at all is unacceptable. Even if Gears of War were free, Bittorrent would be the superior option. It's not only more convenient than anything out there bar Steam, it offers the superior - which is to say functional - product.

torrents suck...
