What is Ops?

When the Space Shuttle is on a mission, isn't there are ground station in Houston/KSC called "Mission Operations?"

It would appear that starships, given their larger crew compliment, carry that position with them.

Odd thing - but I can't remember seeing a Mission Ops station outside of Voyager... unless there was one on the D&E I missed. Defiants, I suppose, would be bundled at the back?

I made the unfortunate decision recently of trying to define what a perminant role as a Mission Ops Manager would be like. It resulted in...

"So what is it you actually do?"
"...I sit around and drink coffee until something interesting happens."

I need to either stop writing as a hobby... or invest in some sort of naval books.

Mission Ops on the Enterprise-D was right in the center of the aft consoles. On the Defiant supposedly Mission Ops had a console at the table - but that is from the old program Captain's Chair so shouldn't be treated as canon.

I think 'Mission Ops' on Voyager are the two stations that flank the MSD at the back. I may be wrong.

A related question is where was the Enterprise's senior science officer?

Hey, maybe he was the guy pulling bridge watch when everyone else was in the meeting room. :)

Spock was so good in the job, that after he left Starfleet, they retired the post.

I mean, there's no question that the ship had a bunch of Science Officers, and one Chief Science Officer analogous to Spock among them. Such a person is directly referenced in "Conspiracy", for example: Riker wants to summon his Science Officer to look at the bug that Quinn brought aboard. The question of whether he was referring to Data or not remains open.

Timo Saloniemi

"It won't like your science officer... it does like you!!!", I always assumed he was referring to Data because it wouldn't be able to take him over.

That was actually always my assumption as well, but it is open to interpretation. Maybe Quinn just wanted to go ahead and get Riker on their side before working his way down the senior staff, and/or was afraid Riker would come back with a security team rather than a science officer. Or it might have just been good ole fashioned Villain Mustache Twirling. (Quinn was acting rather weird, after all.)

All good points.
