iPod Advice Requested

I'm thinking of purchasing an iPod to use while running or biking in the exercise room. My requirements are not too great. I don't need it to hold a great amount of songs: 1K-2K is sufficient. I do need to choose what I'm listening to, so the Shuffle is out. In looking at the Apple website, it looks like the nano might meet my needs. However, the feature that switches the music to a new song when you shake it seems like it would not work well with running. Can it be turned off? Does the nano seem like the best choice, or do I need the Classic?

What good or bad experiences have people had with their iPods?

Also, are my headphones I'm using for my Discman compatible with the iPod?

I have a Nano, and it can be turned off, so don't worry about that shake feature. I like it quite a bit, but I can't really compare it to any of the other models.

I love the shape of the latest Nano models, too.

get a Zune :D

but really, any mp3 player should serve you well . . . Apple's offerings tend to be higher priced while the majority of other brands are just as good and cheaper

I have one of the old style nanos. I like it well enough and I run with it. The pause/off doesn't work well all of the time and the earphones, while they're good sound don't hold up well to sweaty ears. I've gone through two pairs so far. Yuk.

I have one of these too. I don't like the ipod ring control. Accidently touch it and the volume can jump to maximum. With long finger nails it's too hard to use, and I often select the wrong option and have the annoyance of having to step back up through the menu and pushing the wheel around again.

The earphones that came with it are very angular and quite uncomfortable to lay in bed with. If I try to tolerate it, I end up with sore ears.

I've given up on earphones, I prefer dj style headphones now. Bulky yes, but they sound much better, don't make my ears sore, are comfortable, and they don't break.

I wouldn't go out with them though; I only use my ipod in bed. :)

I use winamp to manage my ipod. It's plug and play, appearing as an option in the media library list. You just drag and drop from your media library onto that ipod icon and it copies.

Any headphones with the standard 3.5mm stereo jack will work.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I ended up getting the blue 8GB nano. I tested it out, and I love it! It is a sweet piece of technology, and I marvel that the designers can pack so much into something so small. Truly, as Yoda said, "Size matters not."

^^^ EDIT: I didn't see your last post. Glad you like the iPod.
I'd still strongly suggest giving the Zune a look though.

What he said. Go look at a Zune, seriously. If I could I'd show you mine and
walk you through the features and capabilities and such.

It's really a great product and around the same price or cheaper than an iPod.

If you have any questions about em just PM me. I've owned several models
and sold people who were once iPod owners on these things(was my job at
one point). They really are kickass.

You've made a wise choice.

Apple iPod, original and best digital music audio player!

Regardless of how you define the term, the iPod was by no means the original DAP, the Eiger Labs MPMan F10 predated it by roughly three years. At the time of the original iPod launch in 2001 there were many DAPs (Flash, HDD, CD-based) on the market.

Nor was iTMS the first online music store, incidentally.

there's no denying the fact that Apple puts out a quality product, but by no means is it the only way to go

Yeah, Ipod headphones are over expensive and suck massively. Use your discman ones.

I have the 30gb and love it. But, like Kes said, I cant compare to others that I havent used. THe only other one Ive used is the old mini, and I like the 30gb better.

I'm definitely using my own headphones for it. I hate earbuds, and I will only use them as a last resort.

I'm not an Apple-only consumer or anything, but they are the market leader in MP3 players, and they will be in the game for a long time to come. I can't say that with any confidence about the Zune or any other player. If I start to hear some real-world or more online word-of-mouth, then my opinion might change.

I listened to a podcast while on the exercise bike last night, and it does make the time go faster. I need something to keep my mind busy besides "left, right, left, right," and I think this is going to fill that need quite nicely.

^ Yeah, Im the exact opposite when it comes to headphones, I need earbuds. It drives me insane otherwise.

But I completely agree with the whole exercising thing. I use my ipod when I exercise, and also when Im traveling to school. Its a good 20min walk to my bus stop, and when it's as cold as it gets here my ipod makes the journey a lot more tolerable. Keeps my mind off the pain of the cold

I have a Zune 120 GB, the same size as the iPod Classic, and i have to tell you, it has more nifty things than the ipod. FM tuner, wireless sync capability, bigger screen size. It's great.
