Creationists tell Sir David Attenborough to 'burn in hell'

Sadly, I have heard otherwise intelligent, scientific people (literally, working scientists) ranting about how "God is a delusion" and that anyone who understands science should "realize that there is no such thing as God." I've also sat through lectures in mild shock that the lecturer felt that university classroom time was an appropriate place to mock Christianity for most of his lecture. At the very least, it was unprofessional.

None of those things are the same as saying that science proves that god doesn't exist, which is a ludicrous statement, and nobody with any understanding of the scientific method would make such a statement.

How dare they fling shit at such an articulate, learned, admirable man with their pig ignorant views.

That is an insulting, arrogant, and out-of-place remark. You are no better than the misguided hate-mailers were. You should consider finding a way to deal with your own need to "fling shit" at people who you disagree with.
Huh? Out of place? What you call misguided he calls pig ignorant. He has every right to express that opinion.

"You are no better..." btw, is not about the post, but aimed squarely at Jim Steele... ok?

Anyone who would send hate mail to David Attenborough must be pig ignorant. Except for creationists I have never heard anyone say anything bad about the man. There is a reason why he was voted the most trusted celebrity in Britain - and that is because he is a likeable, friendly, intelligent and caring person who knows what he is talking about.

I am an Atheist and just wanted to clear something up. The letter 'a' before the word means 'without' and 'theist' is someone who believes in deities. An Atheist like myself is someone who is without the belief of gods. Contrary to what some people suggest (including a few posters in this thread), I don't presume definitively that there isn't gods or that there cannot be gods at all. I don't believe in God because there is no evidence to support that theory. I never said that God can't exist. Anything is possible.

In my life, I don't just believe what others tell me without some assemblance of proof to support it.

He definitely seems to be. Outside of this thread I had no idea who he is. So I zipped on over to Youtube, where there are TONS of video clips of him doing his shows. After watching about 6 or 7 of these clips, I like him. He seems exceptionally knowledgeable, accessible, kind of like how Carl Sagan got people like me interested in the sciences. Why people would send this man hate mail is beyond me, and I say this as a devout Christian.

That makes you an agnostic by definition. An atheist, by the established definition, is more than 'not believing in a god or gods'. It is the belief that there is not a god or gods. To use your breakdown of the word, they believe they are without 'a' deities 'theist'.

And there you have it. An Attenborough newbie speaks - and says it all. David Attenborough is a legend. And a genuinely nice man. And has made some of the greatest nature shows of all time. It's not like me to gush in this way, so it's safe to say I'm a fan.

Hate mail? How dare they.

That's a tricky one actually, I hold his position and consider myself an atheist also as do many others.

The only reason I don't discount the possibility of a God entirely is because I know there is no scientific way to discount the possibility entirely, that's a position that should be held by any rational logical thinking non-believer. But the fact remains that whilst I cannot discount the possibility entirely, I am personally quite sure that there is no God.

I am an atheist and I do not say "there is no God" but instead I say that because I have never seen any compelling evidence of God I see no reason to believe in him.

I do not consider myself to be agnostic. As I see it agnostics believe that God is unprovable whereas I believe that God should be able to prove his existence.

"Having no belief in God" is not the same as "Knowing there is no God"

I find that the idea that atheists believe they can disprove the existence of god is most often misinformation spread by religious people.
. No, that used to be Sundays in TNZ.
Why is it so scary to say, "I don't know"?
Then you'd be an agnostic, not a Christian?
Christians believe God was the mover, whether they believe He used Evolution, instant creation or wrinkled His nose a lot.
Outside of this thread I had no idea who he is.
Really? At the very least you have to find the Planet Earth series at a library or something. I could watch those for days on end.....

His brother was the guy that ran Jurassic Park. :)

Shouldn't everybody believe that god is unprovable though?

That's just a fact regardless of what beliefs you do or don't hold.

I actually hold both your position AND the one i mentioned.

Sir David is the only person I 'gush' over. I have been a devoted fan since "Life on Earth" premiered in 1979.

If one looks at how highly his series rate on IMDB

Life on Earth 9.5
The Living World 9.4
Lost Worlds: Vanished Lives 8.4
The Trials of Life 9.6
Life in the Freezer 8.6
The Private Life of Plants 9.5
The Life of Birds 9.4
The Blue Planet 9.4
The Life of Mammal 9.6
Life in the Undergrowth 9.4
Planet Earth 9.8
Life in Cold Blood 8.7

one can tell how superb is work is.

I've watched some more clips, and he's definitely worth watching as a Presenter. He makes it fun and engaging.

They sell them on Amazon as a set. Now I've been wanting to check it out because I love nature shows (interesting ones, believe me I've seen dreadful ones in my time). I might just pick them up now that I've seen how they're presented. A used set in VGC is only $17.

Of course, this looks like something that would be astounding in BluRay, so I may just wait until I buy a BluRay player here in the next 6 months or so.

His brother was the guy that ran Jurassic Park. :)
Which would explain that nagging feeling that I had seen him somewhere before.

I *thought* I knew who he was, until I read his profile on Wikipedia. Considering that most of his work was for the BBC, we don't get to see much of it. And Planet Earth is narrated by Sigourney Weaver in the US, so that wouldn't be a good option.

There are plenty of people on this board who believe that God has proved his existence to them.

I think many people consider that 'strong atheism" (explicit atheism) i.e "I know there isn't a God" is the only form of atheism whereas most atheists would be 'weak atheists (implicit atheists) "I do not believe in God"

Why would a Christian, whose life is full of experiences that prove to him that God does exist wish to think that God is unprovable.

Not trying to start a fight nor offend anyone, but since we are all expressing our point of view, I can say without a doubt that I know that God exists.

Oh J, you're just at the beginning of the adventure :)

Seriously, J, if you've never seen any Attenborough nature programs, you're missing out in a big way. I strongly suggest their immediate purchase. Planet Earth, particularly on Blu-ray, is a life-changer. And that's not even an exaggeration.

Oh right, sorry I thought you were talking about empirical proof.

Strong atheism is not a position I can see has any basis in logic since in order to know there is no God one would need evidence to that effect, which does not and cannot exist.

Sir David Attenborough was a writer of several of the episodes of Planet Earth so he was more than just a narrator for the series.
