Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/09

Re: Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/

I love the way they drew Domino.
Yeah, I do too.

I also liked how they animated her powers by showing the the probability of her accuracy. I dig the updated look of Avalanche too.

Re: Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/

It's definitely not in the same continuity as the films, since various characters are alive who died in the films, and Rogue still has powers....

It is implied at the end of TLS that the antidote is not permanent.

Re: Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/

^^Err, which is hardly relevant, since there are plenty of other reasons why the series is obviously not in the movie's continuity.

If you say so. I haven't seen the series. Just a point of order.

Awful. Just awful.

But plenty of other elements in the show are directly from the movies, such as the bond/relationship between Rogue & Wolverine, The viens protruding from the skin when Rogue touches you, Jean blowing Wolverine a kiss. So the comment is some what relevant.

Re: Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/

It uses elements from various continuities, but there are tons of incompatibilities with any one source, such as the movies.
Awful. Just awful.
Having seen the episodes, what did you not like?

That's somehow unprecedented in the comics? He's not a one-dimensional berzerker; the further he gets from Weapon X, the less like that he is.

Yes he is. That's what makes him popular. They'll try occasionally to write him has having more then 2 brain cells, but no one ever buys it. They always go back to the rampaging midget.

Garth Ennis had Castle call him something in The Punisher that I thought was so true. "Yosemite Sam". "Oh. My. God." I thought, "He IS Yosemite Sam!"

the further he gets from Weapon X, the less like that he is.
Why would a Black Ops organization want a rampaging loose canon on their team? This little bit of logic was always lost on Wolverine fans.

Er, yeah. That's nothing like any of his recent comics stories.

I don't pay attention to crap. Sorry, I don't know what to tell ya.

Since when? The Wolverine I read about in Chris Claremont's comics may not have been the most sedate or intellectual person, but he was hardly a mindless brute. And he was quite popular for a couple of decades. The version you're describing is the degenerated caricature that Wolverine has often been reduced to by later writers who lack the talent or inclination to do him justice. Mercifully, the producers of animated shows don't have the freedom modern comics writers have to indulge in ultraviolence as a substitute for actual story, so they tend to write a Wolverine truer to Claremont's characterization, a troubled man struggling to contain his rage and be a hero rather than a savage. Which is infinitely more interesting.

Re: Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/

Episode 3 was pretty impressive. The school's being rebuilt with Worthington funds, and Emma Frost shows up to offer her services as Cerebro jockey to find Xavier and Jean. Logan doesn't want her around, because of her history with the Massachusetts Academy and the thugs it produced, but she's the only telepathic game in town, and she plays the "we mutants have to stick together" card, particularly relevant in the context of the show. We also meet a youngish Forge, who's the X-Men's resident tech guy. And when Emma locates Charles in Genosha, Wolverine finally convinces Cyclops to come along to rescue him from Magneto. So we get a shot of the team marching toward the Blackbird that's very evocative of Astonishing X-Men, which also clearly influenced the team composition here overall.

Naturally, we get a superfight that turns out to be unnecessary (as so many of them are), since Magneto hasn't imprisoned Charles but found him in a coma and cared for him. So most of the episode consists of character setup followed by action filler.

But then we get an impressive payoff at the end. The X-Men get a communication from Xavier in Big Giant Head mode, and here's the real shocker: he's calling from 20 years in the future, having just emerged from his coma and discovered a state of affairs that any X-Fan familiar with "Days of Future Past" will recognize. He tells the X-Men that this Sentinel-ridden apocalyptic future came about because the X-Men disbanded, and that they need to stay together as a team to prevent it. And for some reason, apparently, Wolverine has to be the one to lead it. We don't find out why just yet, but we'll probably see more of Xavier in the future in episodes to come. And in that future, he's walking, thanks to some kind of armature around his legs. Which explains what we saw in some preview images.

Now, this is an interesting path for this series. The stakes are higher than they've ever been in any previous X-Men show. We saw the DoFP future occasionally in the '90s series, but it was just one storyline out of many; here, it's the defining threat of the show, whose prevention will drive the whole series. And it looks like we'll get to see that future on a recurring basis. This could be quite interesting.

As before, though the show is borrowing elements of the movies and recent comics, I think it's still trying to be compatible with X-Men Evolution. In this case, the evidence for that is Forge. He's shown to be considerably younger than he's been portrayed in the comics, which is compatible with the teenaged Forge we saw in XME, allowing for a few years' growth. On the other hand, Magneto now speaks with an English accent (Ian McKellen-inspired, of course) which he didn't have in XME.

Speaking of accents, I'm pleased that they decided to give Emma Frost an English accent, which is how I imagine her voice (specifically, in my mind she sounds like Olivia d'Abo). Indeed, Kari Wahlgren's performance as Emma is pretty close to what I've imagined -- at least as close as Wahlgren is likely to get. Still, I wasn't too impressed with Wahlgren on Legion of Super Heroes, and I'm still lukewarm about her here.

No, it doesn't work. A bunch of characters are far different. In later episodes, for example,
they meet Mystique for the first time, and Logan has never heard of Weapon X.

Re: Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/

Kind of surreal to see Forge looking out of the ship upside down like Cowboy Bebop's Edward right after hearing Wolverine speaking in Spike's voice.
