Trek Prequel Comic -SPOILERS- (official COUNTDOWN review thread)

Agreed. But you never know what the officially-approved graphic novel/comic backstory to the new, canonical studio film is going to say. If it all but totally ignores NEMESIS and the events of the movie in favor of a "better history," it'll suck in ways even great graphic art can't make up for. NEMESIS is a lousy movie in many respects but it is established, accepted canon in the TREK universe...whether some of the old TOS timeline is reset and altered by the new film or not. Data is dead. End of story. B-4 is the only logical alternative to even have a "new" Data be captain of the Enterprise-E.

It has been stated many times that the comics are set after the events of Nemesis. Noone has suggested that the events of Nemesis will be ignored.

I'm still a bit foggy as to just how long after Nemesis this takes place. The review over at AICN stated that a couple of decades had passed.

So. Does this story take place in the beginning of the 25th Century?

Countdown begins at stardate 64333.4
Nemesis takes place around 56844 I believe.

So that places the events of Countdown about 7 and a half years after Nemesis.

Does anyone know if the comic is being carried in any standard bookstore? I checked both Border and Barnes & Noble and came up empty-handed.

The trade paperback omnibuses are made for book stores. That's due in time for the premiere.

I think maybe I'll just hold out for that. If nothing else, I'll be able to read the whole story in one sitting, w/o having to wait for each installment.

Plus, I'll get to read it right before the movie hits the theaters.

Or the beginning of those events, at any rate. I get an idea that things are spread out over a fair bit of time, as opposed to all happening in the space of a week or a month.

No, sometime in 2386. Seven years(give or take)after NEMESIS and a little over a decade after the end of the Dominion War.

I just remembered something I read some time ago. One of the creators of Star Trek XI (I think it was Abrams himself) said that there would be two Enterprises in the new movie, one of them being a battleship.

Could that mean we will actually see the Enterprise-E on screen? That would certainly be an exciting moment for TNG fans!

Has anyone ever tracked down this mythical quote? I've seen it mentioned a number of times on a number of threads but nobody can provide any context....

I believe it was part of a rumor that was being spun by Vic over at Screenrant, but don't hold me to that. It was a part of a larger discussion about possible multi timelines etc.

Right (As far as it being a rumor,) though I seem to remember an AICN connection.

I also remember a reference many months ago to a more heavily-armed, "battleship"-like Enterprise, but I don't recall where and I've never been able to backtrack and find it again. There was a lot of speculation flying around back then and this could have been some of it.

Edit:

Hold on, here's a TrekMovie article from February, referencing the aforementioned item from Vic at Screenrant, which included these then-deemed-spoilery bits:

The story does not just involve time travel. It actually explores alternate timelines, and jumps between them quite a bit.

While from what we’ve seen so far it seems like they’re being very faithful to the original Enterprise design, in an alternate timeline there will be a significantly different version of the NCC-1701. From what I’ve been told it will be a very kick-ass version - essentially an all-out warship.

Some of the film will also take place in the time of Star Trek: The Next Generation, although I won’t say at what point in the film.

Makes one wonder if there's a classified cameo by Brent Spiner on the 1701-E at the beginning of the new movie and it's being kept under wraps...with the little-known COUNTDOWN comic being the only leakage of the surprise?

I really doubt that. Have you seen Brent Spiner recently? There's no way he'd be able to play Data believably, with as old as he looks. The whole reason why Spiner wanted the character dead in the first place was because he felt he couldn't play him anymore for just that reason. The comics, however, have the luxury of keeping Data at the same "age" he was in the series.

True to a point, but if the "Data" in the comics is B-4...a different android subjected to harsher environmental conditions on Kolarus III and beforehand when he was still disassembled parts...you can always excuse Spiner's appearance as B-4/"New Data."

But you're making the assumption that people who will go see this movie have already seen Nemesis, and would get the B4 reference. Which they wouldn't, because they didn't. They'd be scratching their heads, saying "who the hell is B4?"
