Okay, this time it really, honestly, is the real phaser prop from the film. Not the toy, not a knockoff...the real deal.

From the RPF, via HobbyTalk:

According to the sources on the RPF who've seen the film, the two-tone finish is more obvious in better light; the blue-gray paint is more of a weathered effect on the upper part of the phaser.

First thoughts: I like it much, much better than the toy. The Playmates version was surprisingly accurate to the overall shape, but this has a much more "serious" look about it. I'm especially glad that the red barrel is anodized alluminum, and the other barrel is either not colored or fits inside a housing in the body so the unit looks more integrated.

I assume the button on the side of the handle works the stun/kill setting, but where's the trigger? Is it the whole front of the handle?

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

Odd and just about unheard of to see a phaser that looks like it's made of, you know, metal.

Looks just fine.

I'm sure someone will be along with a different opinion in a moment. ;)

Still too shiny for me. What's up with Abrams and his bright shiny things? :wtf:

Also curious about the trigger. If you have to squeeze the handle, I can just see a redshirt accidentally vaporizing something when he gets too tense or surprised!

(Note: that was another joke for those wound too tight! :) )

That would fit in with Captain Pike's Laser Pistol...Although I'll be amazed if anyone on the production team went that far into Trek Mythos to make it "match up", so i'll put it down to happy coincidence. :P

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

Cool! The trigger is probably that button on the handle right below the stowed emitter, the control to switch modes on the top rear quadrant.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

Not too bad at all, actually.

Looks kind of like the ones in TFF and TUC.

I expect the bashers to arrive in this thread shortly...

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

That's very nice. Brings to my mind right off Forbidden Planet, not sure why but it does - perhaps it has a 50's look to it.

I doubt it...I think it's intended to be a one handed operation. The button is used to twirl the nozzle, the handle is the trigger, as was previously mentioned.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

The handle being the trigger I get, but twirling the nozzle around to go from stun to kill? It's kind of an odd '30s sci-fi serial-ish throwback in a movie that's about taking an old sci-fi show into the 21st Century.

... that has also shown to be using alot of 50's or so scifi design elements.

It works, it looks cool. I can't wait.

Did they do that a lot in the 1930s?

Anyway, a ray gun is a ray gun. Phasers are ray guns. This is a pretty cool ray gun.

Look at it closer....

Just to the left of the shiny silver button, on the forward-facing part of the handle, is a very small area of gray...

That, I would guess, is the actual trigger.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

It doesn't look like the original. It looks too much like Galaxy Quest. And I don't think Bob Orci would let this pass. He's a Trekkie too. He'd know what crosses the line. And this mustn't cross the line.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

Is this phaser for lefties AND righties? When Gene rebooted Trek (TNG) he insisted that dudes with tentacles be able to wield a phaser. I hope those aliens aren't offended by the design.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

Nice. Looks like a sleeker, more advanced phase pistol.
