The New Movie: What Are Your Fears?

number6 basically listed every time Captain Kirk flirted with an enemy alien to get information or escape as evidence of Kirks womanizing which is ridiculous.

Now, Kirk being a womanizer is heavily implied. But implications don't always make logical sense in the world of Star Trek.

It is implied that Starfleet only has 12 ships (something that has made its way into several novels) but everyone knows that is ridiculous.

It is very heavily implied in Turnabout Intruder that women aren't allowed to be starship captains. Again, ridiculous.

How is it ridiculous?? You don't agree with it, that's fine, but it is there on screen and your definition of what you think sex, sexuality and flirting is and should be doesn't change that for the rest of us who know better.

Sure they do. It's implied because the writers want it that way. Kirk is a ladies man. The producers and writers wrote him that way, therefore he is.

It is implied that there are 12 ships in the fleet just like the Enterprise. That never precluded the possibility of other ships in Starfleet. That assertion is ridiculous and novels aren't canon, so kindly keep them out of this discussion.

Wrong again. It implies that Kirk's world of being a starship captain doesn't allow women. He's married to his ship. He simply fools around with women.
His character is written that way.

My only fear is that the movie won't live up to the hype that's been generated in this forum. Which, of course, it can't.

You mean the hype that it will take all our TOS DVD sets and burn them in our back yards while raping our mothers and laughing? Damn.

:guffaw:

Yeah, that hype.

My fear is that some of the naysayers will come around, embrace the movie and then make Internet careers out of lecturing us on who really is a fan of it and who is not worthy.

    That is scary.

My only fear is that it will be an honest-to-God good movie but still fail at the box office. If it turns out to suck and bomb I can blame it on the people who made the movie. If it rocks and still bombs, I can blame no one but the public. The latter is more likely to result in the death of the TV and film franchise for the foreseeable future.

My biggest fears are that they are going to sue some design for the Enterprise that looks completely rediculus and doesn't fit in with theorginial design. Also I'm scared they will use actors that don't even look like the characters they are trying to portray. But my biggest fear of all is that they are going to make a "Kirk-Spock-MCcoy-meet-up-at-the-Academy" movie also known as a "Lets- get-the-original-crew-back-together-when-they-are-younger". What enhances me fears even more is that they would hav ethe crew meet up on the Enterprise.

I don’t have any fears with regard to this movie. In the grand scheme of things, its just one more Star Trek project to add to the Franchise. If it is good, then that’s good. If the movie turns out bad, then I think the Franchise will carry on. There will be a segment of the fanbase that likes this movie regardless. What we like is very subjective anyway. It might be a while before we see new Trek in the event that there isn't broad appeal, but the Franchise will be there for when the next studio head pulls an idea off the shelf.

It is okay for people to be tired of "Star Trek."

Really.

Wow, thanks for the condescension, I was just answering the question.

Have fun reading K/S fanfic though, I'm sure it's the most productive use you have for your time.

The very fiber of the trek universe will be torn and a new breed of trekker will emerge - a stronger, meaner and smarter breed, willing to destroy any Tos dvds in sight and step on their own grandmothers if necessary to survive. This breach will create a holy Fankind civil war that will last generations and will finally end when J.J. takes over the world. TOS will finally prevail though.
