The 10 Most Embarrassing Award Winning Cars

Every element of the Vega’s chassis was built about as flimsily as possible and the unibody structure’s metal was usually attacked by rust mere moments after being exposed to, well, air.

great list :D

Today the Mustang II is the Mustang only the most socially inept enthusiast loves.

I think the Mustang II is kind of cool. But that's only because I loved Jill and Krissy's Mustang Cobra on Charlie's Angels when I was little.

I'm glad to see both the Vega and the Citation on the list. What pieces of crap they were.

Strangely enough, the European models you see on the list had much much hotter versions from Europe itself. Would you rather have the Merkur, or the South African V8 model or perhaps the British RS Cosworth? The Australians did a good job adapting the chassis of the Cadillac Catera and popped a bigger engine under the bonnet.

You have to admire the colonies sometimes, same cars, bigger engines, cheaper petrol :(

Great list. My parents had an 80 Buick Skylark which is one of the X cars. What a piece of crap.

Jim Rome regularly talks about his old Merkur XR4TI on his radio show. His staff is known as the XR4TI crew.

We had an '80 Olds Omega that was excellent. In 102k miles, I only had to replace the clutch (yes, it was a stick!) I sold it to a guy in Indianapolis who had one with over 200k and wanted a "new one".

My daily driver now is a '99 Ford Contour SVT. It has the European suspension and drive train and runs extremely well at 95k miles. I have replaced nothing other than tires. Had it up to 138 MPH one time and have averaged 28.12 MPG to date.

I'm with you on the Mustang II, I still think that was a cool car! And the last time I saw a Vega, it was on the side of the road......... On fire.

Great article. I had forgotten completely about the Merkur XR4Ti, but I thought that car was so cool looking when I was a kid. Looking at it now I realize that's about when I started to need glasses, which explains a lot.

Thunderbird.....hahahahahahahahahhhaha oh man that relaunch completely FAILED. I remember when they showcased it in the 007 Bond movie "Die Another Day". They even got Halle Berry's character to drive it with a bikini to add that final oomph.

Sadly, it FAILED. Everybody was too busy looking at Halle Berry.

Obama thinks the most embarrassing car ever made was the Ford Granada although I don't think it won many awards

Quote:

"The car I learned to drive on was my grandfather's Ford Granada. ... It may be the worst car that Detroit ever built. This thing was a tin can. It was during the '70s when oil had just gone up, so they were trying to compete with the Japanese. They wanted to keep the cars big, so they made them out of tin foil. It would rattle and shake. You basically couldn't go over 80 (miles per hour) without the thing getting out of control."
