The New Movie: What Are Your Fears?

It's what anyone with a backbone does.

Really?

Wonder how the cowardly little Jimmy Kirk described in "Shore Leave" was ever tapped for command, in that case.

He wasn't, which is rather a multitude point, isn't it? Jimmy Kirk the guy who let himself get bullied was never tapped for command. He wasn't tapped for command until years later in which he had time to grow the backbone he needed for command.

For that matter, how did he ever get into the Academy?

Academic ability.

Klingons that stand at least 7 foot tall and can;t be ebaten by 90 pound girls just because the writers wanted that character to live for seven seasons.

They are a warrior race, even the most average klingon would pawn an experienced human soldier. Klingons are (when not raised by humans) conditioned since birth to fight, humans in trek are not (unless they are raised on non federation worlds)

That is what I wanna see

I doubt you'll see that since Klingons from what we know hardly appear in this movie and judging from the trailer a couple of them take a beating from Nero.

My bigest fear is that at some point we'll be forced to watch a Starfleet admiral lunchin. Do you know how horrible it is to watch one of those its like some sadistic ritual that drives anyone watching it mad.

Or just maybe you're making a flatfooted and silly assertion there.
Somebody's father helped him get into the Acadamy. A crew member.

Fixed your quote tags, and it was redshirt crewman Mallory's father who was supposed to have helped in some manner not specified in that one line of dialogue. ("The Apple")

Oh I'll watch it Therin, when it comes out on dvd and buy a copy at a yard sale or something just to keep the library current. A little tweaking is fine but not the entire doggone movie, that goes beyond a little tweaking. But that is just my opinion as others here have their own.

I fear that at somepoint there will be a (shuders) Musical Number. Anything else I don't have a problem with, but if I hear singing I. WILL. GO. NUTS.

I'm afraid that they'll break with the tradition of TOS itself and eliminate any gay subtext between Kirk and Spock. That will upset the K/S folks no end.

I fear that the undeniable fact that Zoe Saldana is hawt, coupled with my inherent Trek-fan weakness for Green Orion Women may corrupt the purity of my ideological hatred for the J.J. Trek Abomination.

Keeps me awake some nights, it does.

I'm afraid that when Nero's inevitable ends comes Abrams won't have him do the oh shit look. I mean come on its tradtion for the villain to have that look before he blows up.

my only fear is given the amount of money spent on the budget of this film, it fails to bring in the number of people required to make a profit.

Look J.J. did a great job directing MI:III but that movie only brought in 133,000,000 dollars in theatres domesticly not recouping its 150,000,000 dollar budget.
while overseas and home video did help it become somewhat succesfull.
thats not what Sumner Redstone, Brad grey and other paramount execs look at when decideing weather its worthwhile to keep making a film franchise.
They are going to look at first off the opening weekend, then look at its final us box office take.

The Mission Impossible series is dead now due to MI 3 poor us box office performance.

There are quite a few big Franchise movies opening in May so its going to be intresting to see how it does.
you have Wolverine, Angels and Demons, Terminator Salvation just to name 3.

Which suggests making all the money back theatrically, though a nice thought, may not be the motivation here but perhaps the money made over the long haul.

The total take with theater, DVD, toys, pay channels and eventually broadcast TV may be enough to justify the big budget. It could be a bird in the hand given enough time and repackaging. I don't really know though, just guessing.

years ago, you would have had a point but thats not the case in todays times.
Studios are all cutting back the number of films they make each year, cutting back on talent(actors, directors etc) salarys, laying off thousands of employees, selling off and or disbanding there subsidary film units.

In this day and age you either make your money back in the domestic box office or thats it.

look at other studio examples, Hellboy sony while the movie eventually made a profit thanks to dvd, it wasnt good enough for sony to justify making a sequal so they dropped it.
If universal hadnt steped in you wouldnt have seen a Hellboy 2 last summer.

The Narnia movies, disney just announced they are not going to be involved with any future Narnia films that might get made, because the last one failed to earn them a profit domesticly.

The one studio that was pretty good about doing a sequals if the dvd sales did well (inspite of poor domestic box office) was folded completely into WB and saw all its staff from Bob shay all the way down to the lowest ranks let go this past summer.

so i hate to say it but, its going to have to really perform at the boxoffice to get a star trek XII greenlit, let alone any future televison series.

Well, I'll try to do my part by, if the film is worth it, doubling the number of times I see it at the theater.

One thing I still don't understand with your explanation though. Given your scenario, this film shouldn't have been made at all given, (so I've been told) NEM failed to make its domestic profit.

My fear is that it will only increase the mudslinging at the older show. Which has already happened to an extent.

I never realized how 'bad' the original show was until I came to this part of the forum.
