First pic of *edit* full-sized toy props....

Presumably the red and blue bits are the 'rotating barrel'??
... Which just sounds like a way to get a redshirt killed while he waits for it to work!!

Depends, doesn't it, on how fast the action is.

How long does it take a redshirt to lower his weapon and fiddle about with whatever is supposed to move the display in the little battery meter on top of the phaser I (I know, the little knurled wheel raises and lowers the "sight" rather than turning the battery meter display)? There's a, um, stereo knob sort of adjustment on the back of the weapon, as I recall, and the numbers that scroll by in that battery meter are pretty tiny...

Maybe on these phasers the switchover from stun to kill can be done at a touch without requiring all that nonsense - this would be a big improvement to Trek technology.

Look at this:

The actual phaser props have been described at the Replica Props Forum as being chrome only on the handle and details, with a very "phaser grey" surface on the rest of the gun and painting variations which suggest usage and wear.

The vacuum metallizing on the phaser looks so cheap it makes the whole thing look like it came from the dollar store. I'm hoping that a good repaint will make the toy look a lot better.

tos series phaser, communicator, and tricorder looked real . these look like toys.:(

Um, breaking news...

These are toys, Playmate toys...They are not real props from the movie ;)
The OP had it wrong at first that they are the real deal.
duh! i mean the design!

Well, then, that's entirely in the eye of the beholder. There's not one thing about the control surfaces in the TOS communicator or tricorder, for example, that look real to me. Certainly they are way outdated.

The thread discussing the props is here. The savvy observer will note the mention of a secret, behind-the-scenes film of the props being made. Wish we could see it.

EDIT: The poster there just added pics of the communicator as well; apparently, it has a viewscreen in the flip-up lid.

Further edits: it seems these are not the real props, but the Playmates toys. Perhaps the mods should merge this with one of the ongoing threads?

Good Lord that is horrible. It does look like a water pistol. Surely that's some sort of prototype. Heck, these days, even "Cheap WalMart" toys are done pretty damn well, IMO. (you know, the isle with the diecast cars and Hot Wheels stuff and figures and planes and tanks...a far cry from what I had growing up).

Very cheesy.

Well I think its the chrome finish that really kills it. I like the design but the finish sucks. Then again, its a children's toy, so it's not a 100% accurate replica. With a movie quality finish, I think it will be nice, and according to some people on the RPF, it is.

Looks like one of those shitty 99 cent toy guns that your Grandma buys you because she thinks she got the name-brand toy, but really she got suckered into buying the cheap knock-off because she's decades out of touch with popular culture. Also, it should have sparks coming out of the tip when you pull the trigger. And it should break after ten uses.

Oh I know. Just a reaction. :)

It actually reminds me of those old "spark guns", with the spinning wheel
and flint. The clear plastic parts maybe.

I think your right about the chrome. And yes, little kids love stuff like this. :)
(Mine just turned 18, so that was a while ago.)

Looks like a ray gun any little kid could love. :)

Okay, at this point, I think you have officially "jumped the shark". Are you getting paid for this hyping? Is there nothing about this movie and all the related merchandise you don't like?

I know I may be borderline mean here, but I've seen better work from you (I think it was) than this garbage. How can you honestly, in good conscious, tell me this phaser toy is anything but a sad pathetic piece of Hong Kong Dollar Store knock-off quality piece of crap?

True. Well I guess according to the person on the RPF the actual prop is the TOS phaser blue with brushed metal accents and black I believe. That, and the stun/ kill transition is actually cool in the film.

Hopefully he is correct.
