Weight Related Discrimination

Sounds like everything worked out for you, teya. Still, it seems like the situation remains a kobyashi maru for the airlines.

and it isn't your affair, to bemoan other people's weight, or how a private airline choose to run their business.

But that's my point. You suggested they instal a row of larger seats. That's offering advice on how the airline should choose to run their business. It still seems that you're criticizing her for saying the same things you've been saying.

And the funny thing is...

The airline's policy is: If you need two seats for whatever reason, you must pay for them both.

She says that's unfair. Which is how the airline chooses to run its business.

Indeed, it does.

Frankly, I wish they'd go back to bigger seats, rather than trying to cram as many people onto a plane as possible.

But then, I wish you didn't have to pay to check luggage either... :p

Well, this thread has certainly encouraged me to continue my diet and exercise regimen, especially in light of the fact that I love to travel and would hate to have my ass inconvenience anyone if I could just get it smaller before my next flight.

Well, it's been fun flying with you guys. Pass some of those free flights my way next time you're having a field day with larger folks, would ya'. :D

There's only so much fat bashing I can take in a single evening...

I am however here all week. Goodnight. I guess you won't be dreaming of well-fed sheep jumping over gates. :D

I'm getting to the point where I'm almost willing to fly first class and avoid all the hassles.

If only I could afford that. :p

I discriminate against fat chicks. I dont like fat women, they look disgusting. Whenever I see one I think she probably stinks and is lazy. Of course I have heard the excuse, "Well I have a thyroid problem." Well I have Grave's Disease where my thyrtoid went wacko so the docs killed it with radiation and now I have to take a pill a day for the rest of my life to replace it. I gained weight, but I had the willpower to get my fat butt up and lose it. I cut out soda, ate sensibly and walked 4 miles a day and soon I dropped 25lbs in one month without some fancy diet or spending money on fancy exercise equipment.

You are only fat because you want to be fat. There is no such thing as a "fat disease."

Fat bashing = A thin person wanting the seat she paid for

Honey, that's not "bashing." That's you demanding special accomodations.

Accomodations that *someone else* paid for.

Hey, you want half my seat? Give me half the money I paid for my ticket and you'll be surprised how accomodating I can be. :D

Earlier today, I would have gotten into an argument with you about how wrong you are, but thanks to An Officer and her feeling that the obese are so special they deserve *better* treatment than anyone else by everyone else, I'll just let this slide.

I don't agree, but I'm not gonna protest it. :p

What happened to teya was just plain wrong, though.

I'm overweight myself, but not so much that I'd need two seats on a plane (even in "sardine" class. :p).

I've never been discriminated against because of my weight, but then I'm pretty good at hiding the extra pounds. I dress well, and make myself stand tall.

Losing/gaining weight doesn't always have anything to do with willpower. I gained about 40 pounds over two months four years ago because I was taking Prednisone. (I also wanted to jump out of a window while taking it, but that's for a whole other thread). I still haven't been able to get rid of it all, and I exercise daily and have cut a lot of sugar and fat from my diet. Any medicine with steroids will make a person blow up a bit- especially drugs for arthritis and asthma (I was being treated for asthma-like symptoms). And it can take ages for the weight to go away. Plus those conditions can make exercise difficult.

So I try not to judge overweight people too much. Not all of us eat five pizzas at one sitting (I can barely eat one slice) or drink six packs of Coke every day.

Boy, you're a nice guy. I am not disgusting and I am rather attractive (so I've been told) despite my weight. I sure as hell don't want to be fat. And I work on it everyday.

There are only two times when I drink soda -- 1.) If I'm traveling and we hit McDonald's for a quick lunch or 2.) With a mixed drink.

I'd be so happy if cutting out soda would solve my weight problem. If the 1-6 cans of Mountain Dew a day I drank were the problem, I'd give them up. The problem is, I don't drink soda like that.

If eating five pizzas a day were my problem, I'd cut back to ... well two. ;)

I've been eating healthily. I just eat too much and tend to skip breakfast. I also don't get enough exercise. I'm working to solve these issues. I hope it makes a difference.

Even then, I don't want to be the person spilling into teya's seat. That's just embarrassing. I'll never be willing to accept that.

They currently don't have larger (non-first-class) seats or free 2nd tickets or any of the other ideas we've talked about.

They don't exist.
Well they should.
Or if 2 people put together don't fit in 2 seats, they should upgrade one of them to 1st class. Do they fear that if they upgrade larger people it would be too much of an encouragement? Or would it upset the people who paid for first class to see second class people get it?
I find it shocking that there is a first class at all, such a difference in comfort between business and tourist class.
Airlines should have at least a row of larger seats at a normal price. But it's all about business and fitting as many seats as possible... when planes are often not full anyway.
The size of seats should be determined by the size of the population, just like American movie theatre seats are bigger than French ones.
It is NOT RIGHT to make ONE pay for TWO seats. If it's about total cargo weight, the lighter ones with lighter luggage make up for it.

And Teya, I think you created a slight misunderstanding by doling out the details of your story post after post. Being literally kicked out of a flight like you were is unthinkable, but that wasn't clear at first.
You make it sound like, if your seat neighbor encroaches on your seat, they should pay more, and... why wouldn't you pay less, in that line of thought? It doesn't work that way. One person, one seat. It's bad enough that large clothes are more expensive.

About the question of fighting one's weight,
1. Sometimes it's just not possible.
2. Knowing what to do is not enough.
3. Struggling people suffer from the stereotypes set by the more careless ones.

Concerning metabolism, it isn't easy, and it isn't cheap, but there are ways of detoxing your body and sort of resetting it. A friend of mine did it. It required great dedication and very precise composition of meals (like no dairy products! I could never do that), + treatments with electrical devices or something.

On the question of appearance making a difference in the workplace, it is so true, not only related to weight. Competence is not enough, even when your job doesn't involve contact with the public. You have to charm your employers even though it's totally irrelevant.

Lastly, I agree with who pointed out that personal preference for dating or something, and discrimination (especially in the work place) are 2 very different things. You're not supposed to deal with people on terms of attractiveness unless it's about dating. In everyday contacts and business, attitude matters more than looks.

You are only fat because you want to be fat. There is no such thing as a "fat disease."
There are such things as "busy" and "mental block" and "addiction" or "compulsive eating".

If a person who drinks two sodas a day cuts back to one or two a week, they'd save 2100 calories a week. That adds up. It's just one step I've been taking (I had a one Coke a day habit...two a day once every two weeks), in addition to exercising more.

I haven't had a soda since January 2nd. Fat lot of good cutting back from two a day to two a week will do me! I wish it were that simple.

Then again, do soda drinkers have that kind of discipline?

Not always! I've had a hard time giving up Coke. But it gets easier as time goes by.

Like I said, giving up soda is just one step for me. So far it seems to be working- I've lost five pounds since my last doctor's appointment (that was five months ago). Baby steps. Slow and steady wins the race! It's going to be a life long process, but I can do it. :techman:

Perhaps it's discrimination too. Lots of women with extra-amply endowed bosoms are railing against having to pay more for their bras too.

Your body has a thing called a "liver" that takes care of all the "detox" you need, the rest of it is mumbo-jumbo sold by con artists. As I said in another thread on this, the only person you want sticking a hose up your ass is a dutch hooker.

This is how it works person starts to work out, eats better + follows mumbo jumbo treatment (be it a hose up the ass, magic pills whatever) - gets thinner and then thinks "wow mumbo jumbo works" - even though it's their hard work watching their diet and exercise that actually did the job.

However I like to end on a positive note, so here's are two really simple tips for anyone who wants to appear more attractive to others - no diet required.

1) learn how to stand up. Seriously - most people seem to be hunched over like they are up for a part in the hunchback of notre dame. Get a starving actor to teach you how to stand.

2) Learn to look people in the eye - this is tied to 1) - it's not attractive or impressive if you are talking to someone and looking at the floor and mumbling. I can never get over how many people talk and look everywhere but at you.

That will be $50 please.
