Refit Grill Question

Unfortunately, that's not a picture of from the studio model but rather a detail set for the 1:350 PL kit

I know. Did you not see this part?

The studio model was built using a photo-etched metal detail plate in each engine thruster. Each thruster was a mirror of the other. Images of the unattached PE metal thruster was referenced while creating product for model and toy companies. For the definitive pattern, take a look at the decal in the large Polar Lights model kit or the photo-etch metal parts designed for the plastic kit.
It's copied directly from the real filming miniature. You can't get more authentic than that.

I just look at this thread and imagine the restaurant in TMP being called the "Refit Grill" and Kirk going in to order a bit of prime rib...

Grilled tofu is more like it (not that there is anything wrong with that), this was late-GR era stuff, like early TNG, so they were all probably vegan or vegetarian.

Tofu - "yuk" sums up my reaction to that!

They seem to still enjoy a nice fat Steak in Enterprise, can't imagine a real man like JTK noshing on Tofu!

Hmmmm... so then, the only remaining question is... "was it intended to simulate a three-dimensional internal-nozzle-structure, or is it supposed to represent a 2-D grill widening-effect?"

I still think, looking at the effect on-film, that it's supposed to look like it's a rectangular-ish internal nozzle. So if I were doing this from scratch, I'd have the grill be uniform and build a light-box inside the kit there (and in fact, based upon this conversation, I think that's exactly what I'm going to do when I finally build my big P/L 1701(r).)

But if Thomas Sasser somehow got access to the real thing, and if his grill really does represent the real thing (and Thomas isn't infallible, but tends to do pretty well, all things considered!) then EITHER WAY is probably an acceptable approach, depending on whether you're trying to replicate the studio model or trying to replicate the "design intent."

1. The image says (c) 2007.
2. When the model was recently sold, the grills were not there.
3. The grill shapes there do not match those on the filming model. (The third row of openings from the top should go over farther)
4. I doubt that the maker of this photoetch set had access to the real filming miniature.

My wife regularly whips up vegan desserts that 'fool' the crowd at work, and has often done likewise with well-seasoned tofu and tempe substitutes for meat and seafood dishes. About the only thing you can't fake completely is a charbroiled burger from KirkBurgers (that's a nod to San Jose area folk), but I'm sure it is only a little ways off.

Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Well, good for her I guess - I remained unconvinved though I am afraid, I'm sure someone will try to convert me in person at some point!

^Yes, we do. I suspect these are the two people who have been arguing about this issue. This thread seems to be the "con" to the other's "pro."

Looks like different participants to me. The discussion here seems to be a little less heated. I started this thread and have not participated in the other. It was intended as a serious technical question, in the hope that someone here may have seen the item first hand.

the inner light on the impulse engines is the actual engine, which passes through the outerchamber where the plasma is more than likley accelerated to provide adequate thrust. on TNG ships, the acceleration process is built into the engine.
