John Travolta's son dies at 16

How terrible :( The poor family...only 16.

Trekker, your posts are truly disappointing. I truly hope you never have to deal with such a tragedy.

He had Kawasaki Syndrome, apparently...it's rare to see it in a child over the age of 8, but not unheard of.

Then why didn't he(laughter echoing up from inside me)wear a(laughter bubbing maniacally now)crash hemet?!?!?!?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sick, I know, but I couldn't help it.

Also, Scientologists are fucktards and if they're going to deny their children vital medical treatment, this kind of shit is going to happen.

Ah, so you're that guy who starts cracking jokes at an autistic kid's funeral and thinks it's a good idea.

Except he's not at the funeral. None of us knew the person. It's sad but some people are being a wee bit too serious. This happens every freaking day only this time it was to someone famous' son.

I agree.

I told this to my partner when I heard about it and I was actually a little, well, I wouldn't say upset but it was shocking.

My partner looked at me and said, "Why do you care?"

He didn't and said, we have our own lives to live - if one of us died tomorrow, that rich, indulged kid wouldn't bat an eyelid.

I am sick of this gushing and false feeling for people we don't even know.

Also, look at his life. Have you seen pictures of the Travolta estate? They have a corridor/wing thing that connects to their house where Johno parks the PLANE, yes, that's right, THE FUCKING PLANE so they can take afternoon flights to Walt Disney World and Las Vegas. The kid probably lived MORE and had more indulgences in his sixteen years than TEN of us will have in our ENTIRE lives.

He had a good run, albeit a relatively short one. He NEVER had to worry for ONE FUCKING SECOND where the money was going to come from for the electricity or if there would be food on the table tonight. And you know what? He wouldn't have given two shits if you went without a meal, either.

In the words of Sarek, "Spare me your false platitudes."

I pray the Travolta family can come to terms with this and carry on. It will take a long time to overcome, but they'll never get over it. It is something that will rest with them for the remainder of their lives. I offer my sympathies, and also a feeling of empathy to the loss of a close loved one, that no one should feel such pain.

J.

I agree with that.

Not to mention the fact that I have nothing but contempt for Scientology and its members.

What problem does Scientology have admitting to the existence of autism?

Scientology denies the existence of all mental illnesses, including autism. They maintain that Psychology is a pseudoscience, and that Psychiatry is a vast conspiracy to control people.
Opponents of Scientology have pointed out that, if Dianetics (the 'science of mental health' that lies at the core of Scientology) is to succeed, it can only do so if the established rival, Psychiatry, is abolished.

I feel very sad for them. the kid looked exactly like his dad. that picture, where Travolta is looking at his son and vice versa, you could see the sheer, undiluted flow of love and wonder between the two of them. so sad. life's not fair. :(

Not to disagree with the opulence of the estate, but owning a small plane for afternoon trips is well within the means of a reasonable number of people. Most just don't know it. 2- and 4-seater Cessnas are available used ranging between $150k and only $20k; typically the cheap ones are older, of course. 1960s vintage. Payment plans often require only 10-15% down. Plus, if you lease the plane to a flight school when you aren't using it, you can often work out an arrangement where their insurance covers the plane *and* they cover some of the maintenance fees. You won't make money doing that, but it can take a big bite out of the price tag.

It's really sad when a kid gets taken that way, it's a pretty sad way to die. I hope the family's getting support.

Well, if you have nothing good to say or don't give a shit that the kid died, then by all means don't post in a thread about his death.

Don't rush in here to call out people with a stronger sense of empathy.

I also find it amazing that some people just can't grasp how to handle tragic news and just go on being their mildly witty selves, apparently oblivious to how out-of-touch with reality they look.

Well that makes little sense. How does an 8 year old get a motorcycle license?

Funny but perhaps a little too soon for some.

Levity helps the healing.

i will keep that in mind when you are dealing with a tragedy.

i dont care for scientology but some of the individuals who get involved in
it are decent people.
i have admired travoltas work for a long time and he has supported a long list of charities over the years.
losing a child is depressing who ever it is.

It doesn't really matter what religion somebody's gotten involved with or how well off the family is; dying at sixteen is a tragedy and losing a child is a tragedy.

Why, I bet The Wizard could even give you a heart, Tinman.

Who gives a damn how rich and pampered his lifestyle may have been? Like that somehow makes it no big deal? It's still a 16 year old kid being killed in a tragic accident. I didn't have to have known him or his family personally to empathize with their situation and think that this is incredibly sad. I'm not crying or personally upset about it, because like you said I didn't know them, but there's nothing wrong with expressing regret or sympathy, and if you have a problem with people doing that the least you can do is keep it to yourself.

Dying of a seizure is dying in a "tragic accident"?

It's my understanding that the seizure caused him to fall and hit his head in the bathtub. Is that no longer considered accurate? I haven't been following it since the initial reports.

[edit] Looking it up, the coroner simply lists the cause of death as "seizure" with no mention of head trauma, so I guess the initial reports by police were wrong.

If simply falling and hitting your head in the tub was enough to kill you, I'd of been killed three or four times over by now.

That doesn't surprise me in the slightest. :p

But I'd be willing to bet that falling and hitting your head in the bathtub probably causes quite a few deaths, especially with the young and elderly.
