Scrubs Might Not End After All (Spoilers S8)

Just finished reading a very recent interview with Bill Lawrence who hints that while he is considering the 8th season the last and has recently finished filming the series finale, it might actually only be a series finale for...

Zach Braff looks set to leave at the end of season 8 and maybe Bill himself too.

Michael Ausiello asked Bill about the FINAL EPISODE...

It's about J.D.'s exit from the hospital and whether you can hold on to the relationships of your youth, or whether some of them fall by the wayside. J.D. takes a job at a hospital 37 minutes away because it's in a town where Kim (Elizabeth Banks) lives with his kid; he wants to be in the same town as his kid. He does it thinking it will make absolutely no difference in his life, but, of course, it does. It's a little bittersweet, but I don't think it will bum anybody out

Also there will be some sort of conclusion for the JD/Elliot relationship too but this is what got my attention and hints that Scrubs could continue...

The reality is, Scrubs is incredibly reasonably priced. And without Zach's salary and my salary, it's probably cheaper to make then some new shows. And it's sold into syndication, so every episode that gets produced, ABC makes $1 million or so on the back end. I don't think it'll be a creative decision. I think if this show comes on and by February it's doing a 3 rating [in the 18-49 demo], it'll be on for another year. And if it's not, it won't.

He also hints why his ending of the show was with J.D, he is open to the show going on. To be honest It would feel having no J.D but at the same time if ABC wants it to go on then am happy.

Heres the full interview

Scrubs

The show is over when the creator and the star leave. Let it die with dignity. The network can keep reanimating the corpse, but why would anyone watch it? It's been on for ages, plenty of good stuff there, now watch something new.

The character of JD is the focal point of scrubs, and without him the show would just be shadow of its former self. If Braff is gone after this season, then so should end the show.

Totally agree. Scrubs without JD/Braff would be like continuing The X-Files without Mulder, or Batman being someone other than Bruce Wayne.

Add another voice to the chorus... if Braff and Lawrence leave, the show should end. Eight seasons is a great run -- especially for Scrubs, which has had to fight for every season it's got.

Besides, I can't see Sarah Chalke and others wanting to stick around, either; time to move on. Personally, I think Chalke could become a big star. I know I'd much rather see her in movies than, say, the unbearable Jennifer Aniston.

Since the show's been on the downslope creatively even with Braff and Lawrence, I wouldn't watch a ninth season, but I've never been one to say a show shouldn't continue just because I don't want to see it anymore.

They could spin it off with the interns anyway.

There are no likable interns though that could carry a show. A spinoff won't happen because for that you mostly need a change of location, it will be kept at Sacred Heart so more likley Dr Cox will become lead and a new intern or current one will join the main cast.

To be honest I love Scrubs but now the more I think of it, the show should end this year though we could have specials now and again. ABC should get Bill to write them a new show, infact I would love him to write the US version of IT crowd since NBC declined it, ABC should go for it.

Much as I love Scrubs I'd like it to end strong and not dilute itself and ruin the memory of the entire series, the way X-Files and SG1 did.

I guess I'm just looking at House as the example.

That episode where Cox was parodying House was brilliant.

But yes, Scrubs should end this year. Seasons 6-7 weren't brilliant by any standard and it's reaching the point now where it clearly is time for people to move on. You can only keep up marrying people and giving them babies for so long. Hopefully s8 will return to the heart of the earlier seasons and finish the series in an appropriate manner.

Or just bring back Heather Graham. Or give her a spin-off with the interns from House. Anything's possible.

but I've never been one to say a show shouldn't continue just because I don't want to see it anymore.

While I understand the general sentiment of this thread, this quote is where I come down on this issue. As I always say, everybody here has the right to "cancel" whatever TV series they want by simply not watching it.

And I agree with the many here that believe that Scrubs without Braff just won't be Scrubs anymore, and I mostly likely wouldn't watch going forward. But for the people who want to see further adventures of Dr. Cox, or Turk, or Janitor, more power to them. I certainly wouldn't begrude anyone enjoying seeing these guys on TV.

I don't even know how you'd structure the show without J.D.. The whole show basically happens through his perspective. The "His/Her Story" episodes are cool because they're narrated by someone else, but really, it always ends up back with Braff and J.D..

Doing the show from someone like Dr. Cox's perspective wouldn't be as good. Cox is funny as much because of J.D's internal reactions to him as he is because of his hilarious rants. I wouldn't want to be in his head for any length of time.

I love this show and whatever they could do without Lawrence and Braff would be a disgrace to all the cool stuff they've done over the past 8 years. Time to let it go, methinks.

Totally agree. Scrubs without JD/Braff would be like continuing The X-Files without Mulder, or Batman being someone other than Bruce Wayne.

Actually, I thought The X-Files got a lot better without Fox Mulder. I loved John Doggett.

But Scrubs without J.D. just doesn't make sense. I'd suggest that maybe it could work if not for the fact that J.D. is also the narrator of the whole thing. They're not just losing one character. They'd have to retool the entire feel of the show.

Plus, one of the series trademarks is the fantasy sequences. The show wouldn't even be half as funny without those. Having another character have the ridiculous fantasies that JD has just wouldn't fit with any of the established characters.
