Questions about Romana's

Just got done watching the (Key to Time) saga through
(Destiny of the Daleks) and was wondering why Mary Tamm quit being Romana and why Lalla Ward was chosen and why no regeneration between the 2 being shown?

So far i liked Mary Tamm better, Ward just feels like another generic companion.

From what I understand, she didn't re-sign her contract because she was pregnant (?) and didn't want to do another season anyway. I could be wrong. I'm certain one of the more hard-nosed "experts" will come in with some quick data for you.

And, yes, Tamm was the superior Romana. If not for the real-life romance with Tom Baker and their on-screen chemistry, I don't think Lala Ward's incarnation would have been so popular...

Mary Tamm was, at the time, a bit higher profile an actress than had played a companion in... well, pretty much ever (she'd had a lead role in a film, which beat most of her predecessors). She took the part thinking she was going to be co-lead (a bit like the RTD Doctor'n'Rose set up), and decided to leave after one year when that didn't really work out.
Producer Graham Williams hoped right until the last minute that he could persuade her to stay, so she wasn't written out properly (the same thing had happened the previous year, when Leela was written out in a last day rewrite). Then her pregnancy pretty much finished off any chance of a pre-regen cameo even if there'd been the will to do it.
Lalla Ward was cast to take over partly because she and Tom Baker had hit it off while filming Armageddon Factor: Tom was very temperamental by this point and was frequently threatening to quit, so having someone who'd already shown an ability to calm him down on set around was a good idea, as was apparently pointed out by Mary Tamm herself, as she reportedly suggested that Lalla Ward should replace her. And also, the production team had spotted during production of Armageddon Factor that Lalla Ward 'got' Doctor Who, and could cope with the schedules.

Oh i didnt no Tom had a thing going on with Ward. Makes watching these episodes more interesting to watch. Still so far none of them match up to Mary jane Smith.

It was such a Joy listening to Mary and Lalla (in character, reading a script) bicker about who was the superior and definitive Romana in the Gallifrey Audio Adventures.

The wikipedia page talks about why Mary left, other than the baby of course, she didn't feel that Romana was being written as at least the Doctors equal, which does sound about right all things being equal, considering that she got better marks than him at school and she didn't have repeat her final year either... hey, that's pretty George from Grey's Anatomy. heh. Held back. Poor lad.

Romana II certainly isn't to everybodies liking. She still has the smarts and imperialism of Romana I but on top of that she's far more experienced and is armed with Douglas Adams dialogue. Basically she's less of a companion and more a female equivalent of the Doctor and is more or less treated as such, right down to a few of her outfits. The only real exception to this is the screaming bit in "Destiny of the Daleks" which seems very much out of place in retrospect (even in the story it doesn't match up to Romana's later reactions to the Daleks.)

This equality causes problems in itself as a lot of the villains seem hopelessly outmatched. Two Doctor's, two sonic screwdrivers (she makes her own) and K9 - You sometimes wonder if you're meant to feel sorry for some of the bad guys.

Well she had just regenerated, that makes Timelords act a little odd

Whoa! Romana meets her previous incarnation?! Which audio is that? I'd love to check it out...

They made an off shoot series called "Gallifrey" about President Romana, Leela and their two K9s who did not get along at all. The Inquistioner from trial of a timelord was President Romana's political foil for the most part of the stories before everything went to hell.

There was 14 of them, which comprised 3 seasons.

Here's a cover with Mary:

So wait...is Mary Tamm playing Romana I or The Inquisitor? Or did they get the original actress for her back, as well?

I'll have to download these from Big Finish....thanks!! :techman:

Mary is playing Romana.

It gets quite weird.

They manage to acquire the same actress who played the inquisitor from the 80s for the series.

Inquisitor Darkel is played by Lynda Bellingham, who played her back in Trial of a Time Lord.
Mary Tamm plays the first Romana, who's there because... well, that's spoiler territory, though you can probably guess that it is a result of the evil schemes of an evil from before the dawn of time (or maybe the bits just after that which the Time Lords prefer to forget)...

Wow, they even got Lynda Bellingham? Now THAT is commitment from Big Finish. I'm definitely downloading these now... :techman:

Romana II and Leela meet in the 40th anniversary episode Zagraeus which is number 50. Although the lead up to that was every single story with Charlotte Pollard in it. At the end of 50, it's just a little bit like the final scene form Cassablancca between the Timelady and the Savage.
