I found out the incompetent megabitch office manager/one woman HR department was hired because she fucked the company owner to get the job. The only reason she hasn't been fired (she is a class action lawsuit in waiting) is because she's still fucking him to stay in his good graces.

Also, unbeknownst to anyone else at my work, the company's former co-owner is starting a competing business in March and is planning on siphoning employees from my boss one by one. I'm on his list of people he intends to "steal".

Anyway, today I learned that the search for the 11th Doctor is over, and an announcement will be made tomorrow.

It's been a long time since I did cannulation with any regularity, but I never liked messing around with the back of the hand. I just dug into the antecubital. It's a whacking big vein & bigger than the ones in the hand. And if someone is shutting down anyway due to shock, I found the antecubital is easier to hit than the hand veins. Most of the time people had difficulty, it was because they didn't go in deep enough. Sure, it hurts more than the back of the hand, but it's a quicker job, has a higher chance of success (so the overall pain is less) and the venflon stays in place for longer so you don't need to stick a new one in all the time(admittedly, partly because the patient doesn't like bending their arm much... )

I rather enjoyed doing venflons as a houseman; I was the one my friends called when they couldn't get one sited, so I collected lots of favours in return.

Venflons were the bane of my house officer's year. Everyone needed one but no-one could do them, and everyone would ask me to do them for them. As for the antecubital fossa, it's the sort of place that a renal consultant would deeply frown upon - they usually save those veins plus the veins of the wrist in case they need to perform an AV fistula for haemodialysis in the future. Me, I just tell them that the patient's going into shock and needs immediate resuscitation. They then of course tell me to put in a central venous line. Of course, for urgent dialysis they'd end up putting a dual-lumen venous catheter anyway. Such is life. [sigh]
