Pertwee was announced 17 June 1969 and debuted in the role 3 January 1970.

Davison was announced on 5 November 1980 and debuted 4 January 1982 (not counting his appearance at the tail end of "Logopolis" on 21 March 1981).

McCoy was announced 27th February 1987 and debuted 7 September 1987.

So gaps of several months aren't uncommon. It's only the production schedule of the specials, and the longer shooting times of the new series generally, that make this announcement seem so early.

Shouldn't he be thanking you for your warning instead? Now that he knows the name of the actor to play the Doctor is about to become public he can avoid the news, internet forums, friends, family, work and life in general. After all that's the only way to be sure he can avoid this particular 'spoiler'.
