Official Trailer Review & Comments Thread!! [Spoilers, of course]

Talked with a friend the other day who had seen the trailer. He asked me what the movie was about so I told him what little I knew of the plot. Time travelling Romulans trying to kill people to change their future and his response was,

"So it's like the Terminator...but in space and with Romans instead of robots."

Thought about correcting him but instead I just said, "Yeah, close enough."

I was watching VOY "Futures End" when I noticed a passing resemblance of Braxons timeship Aeon (lower left side of this schematic) to Spock's timeship.

Spock's ship appears to be much larger and has a large single sphere whereas Braxon's is much smaller overall and has two smaller spheres on either side of the main body suggesting a shared, but distant lineage.

I know, nothing earth-shattering but I thought it interesting enough to share. Especially considering the fact we haven't been given something new to ponder in over a week now. :(

The Enterprise being built on the surface, I don't see the argument. It fits.

We've been over that very image several times in these parts. Even Sternbach says that is a test facility, not an actual construction site.
Yeah, I really don't think we need to start that brawl up again. We're still figuring out what to do with all the bodies left after the last three or four rounds.

Well I wasn't here for them, sorry.

As for Sternbach, he can say whatever he wants after the fact but the
image plus other dialogue suggests he is wrong, I'll go with that.

But I suppose the discussion is already closed and that suits me, I had no
intention of arguing with anyone since there is nothing they could say to
change what's seen.

Jolan Tru.

[struggles and loses]

What dialog establishes the ship was built on the surface? That image doesn't even show a finished starship. It shows structures that resemble finished components of a starship ... in pieces and with no indication what those structures actually are. Does this photo prove that the Saturn V was built on its side outdoors? Show us one still from prior Trek footage that shows a starship under construction on the ground and compare it with this still of 1701-D under construction in a dock and there might be some meat to this debate. Prior to Trek XI, however, no ship was ever shown in construction on the ground. But there has been plenty of evidence that starships are at least assembled in orbit, both onscreen and in interviews and commentaries by production personnel outside of individual episodes.

Orci et al have, for one reason or another, determined that their version will show 1701 being assembled on the surface. That is certainly in their perogative as film makers. It is, however, in contradiction to forty years of Trek lore.

Mods forgive me -- I'm only human.
Mostly.

In the grand world of canon, is nothing but a small spec, seriously I doubt this will make or break the movie. Having it on the ground is better and makes much more sense than building the dam thing in space because the Fed is still very new and inexperience.

And it's never been said ships aren't built on the surface of planets.
Only that some are built in space. And the TOS Enterprise was never
described one way or the other.

Don't know if anyone has noticed this yet, freeze the frame at 1:43. To the right of Spocks timeship I can see two First Contact era Vulcan ships (The one that landed at the end). :)

I may be going insane but I may also see the Enterprise above one of the Vulcan ships, far in the distance. Recommend you get the 1080p version to see all this stuff though :)

The Enterprise may be a bit of a stretch, but I definately see one Vulcan ship (bottom right hand corner) and what may be a second just to the right of the time ship's window.

Has anyone seen confused matthew's review of the trailer on YouTube?? Frankly, I think the guy's overreacting just a tad! Yeah, the trailer makes the new Star Trek look like just another lame action shoot-'em-up blockbuster...but let's face it, it's the job of the people making the trailers to grab people's attention and get them interested in the new movie, and to do that they're going to play up the most action (or sex)-oriented stuff - because in Hollywood that's the sort of thing that represents the lowest common denominator amongst us commonfolk! :p

In actuality, I'm betting the new movie will strike a nice balance between the ingredients of classic Star Trek and the more post-Star Wars type of FX bonanza. If Abrams and the writers can pull it off, I'll be most impressed...

Alrighty then...it seems like everybody around here just up and leaves and lets the thread die on the vine when I come around!

Yeah, damn right this is a bump. So freakin' what?!

If you arrive at a thread a month and a half late (not to mention during the middle of the Christmas/New Year week) you've got to expect that it might not be quite as active any more.

Yeah, damn right this is a bump. So freakin' what?!
Given your history with gratuitous thread-bumping, here's what: do it again and you'll get a warning.

[Correction: Since you've been cautioned against doing that very thing on a number of occasions, and as recently as September of this year, you've got a warning for spamming. Congratulations, and comments to PM.]

Regarding your post, I tried a couple of times to watch that Confused Matthew review (to which you could easily have linked, but instead forced me to go looking :vulcan: ) and I got tired of waiting for him to get to the point.

Any point.

I have no idea whether he was overreacting or not, but if he can't even get to the beginning of the review by the time the first minute is over, then why should I bother sticking around?

I've given up watching anything on youtube - I always get bored before it gets anywhere. So, I admit, I never even tried looking for that video. Glad I didn't miss anything.

Did anyone catch ...

I was just watching the newest trailer and in the opening scene, the red corvette (i think) is speeding and makes a sharp right onto a road (notice the white hard top on the car), then in the next shot, the top of the car is down. Just strange I thought. Surprised no one caught that.
