All 30GB Zunes: Dead.

Microsoft are always having problems. Buy an iPod

I was waiting for this one. Thank you ever so much for your sage advice.

Except for the fact that if I had wanted an iPod I would've gotten one instead of the Zune, wouldn't I.

Besides, iPods have their own share of problems. Remember the widespread issue with their batteries a few years ago?

Eh, Apple never told it's customers "Sorry, but iPods don't work right on leap years"

Neither did Microsoft. It's out for ONE day out of a leap year. It's a glitch. It happens.

Which can't be said for Apple's iPod battery issues a while back. How many 1st gen iPods are still functional, I wonder?

Mine is. I replaced the battery for $10 2 years ago. Don't use it since it's only 10 gigs, but it works.

Geez! No wonder mine's been displaying the Zune logo since last night. It's usually at my stereo docking station, and then I noticed I couldn't access the main menu.

Now that's being an apologist.

As much as I love some of Apple's stuff, hell, I even worked for them for a while. You would still here me cursing The Jobs if he told me due to lazy and dumb programming, my iPod won't work 1 day out of the year. That's bullshit.

The iPod Classic support section has 809 pages. Glad to see their are no issues with Apple's products.

Show me where it says iPods doesn't work right during leap years.

I never said iPods don't have problems. But seriously, if you've been in the computer software business for over 25 years, like both Microsoft and Apple, you'd think leap years wouldn't be so damn pesky.

Also, what about if they're phone software had been written with the same glitch? People would go apeshit if they're mobile phone didn't work for a day.

If this happened to the iPhone, Apple would get fucked hard.

Again, the devices work perfectly during the year. You make it sound like for the entire 365 days the thing doesn't work right. They just added the date/time function to the firmware in one of the last updates, something was overlooked there. Sure, it sucks and they should have caught it but that doesn't make Apple suddenly any better.

The video zune isn't a bad device, actually, but the Zune software really really sucks.

See, I'm not the one who was boasting Apple being so much superior. I started out bashing microsoft.

And I will continue to bash Microsoft.

I even made a post where I said if this had been Apple I would bash them too.

I've used Microsoft and Apple for 20+ years, I can bash whichever company I want.

A minor correction to the "fix" I posted earlier. According to Microsoft's site, the time we have to wait for is noon Greenwich Mean Time.

I have no idea why it would be noon rather than midnight, but I thought I'd better clarify that in case people were expecting it to work as soon as the ball drops in Times Square.

Why do Microsoft's programmers always seem so sloppy and fail to anticipate normal occurrences like leap year days? They did the same thing with the Y2K thing with referencing years with only two digits when they were looking at not just the century, but the entire millennium flipping over just a couple of years after they wrote the code. Not to mention the continuous security flaws that keep cropping up in Internet Exploder. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

When it comes to date & time, some of Microsoft's software works on the offset from GMT regardless of what the actual computer date & time is (Outlook is a prime example) so it's possible the Zune is the same.

No, but I do remember a couple of guys vandalizing ads with something along the lines of "IPOD BATTERIES ARE SUBJECT TO THE EFFECT OF ENTROPY AND DEGRADE IN CAPACITY AFTER YEARS OF USE, AS DOES EVERY OTHER INSTRUMENTALITY CONSTRUCTED BY THE HANDS OF MAN, BUT MY BRAIN IS MADE OF PUDDING SO I CANNOT COMPREHEND THIS FACT."

Well, actually, it was "IPOD'S UNREPLACEABLE BATTERY LASTS ONLY 18 MONTHS," but considering that battery life depends on use (and whether or not the individual battery is ages quickly a problem which can take, well, 18 months to realize) so he was jumping the gun in assuming that a large number of people would share in his misfortune, and that the Zune also lacks a user-replaceable battery, I'm not sure why you're bringing it up.
