All 30GB Zunes: Dead.

At least for now. I thought I had broken mine when it was stuck at the loading screen this morning. Turns out its a widespread problem with all 1st gen models.

After droves of frazzled customers flooded online forums complaining about their Zunes freezing up, Microsoft confirmed Wednesday that the 30-gigabyte device was, in fact, troubled with hardware issues.(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)
“We are aware that customers with the Zune 30GB are experiencing issues with their Zune device. We are actively working now to isolate the issue and develop a solution to address it,” the company said in an e-mail.

They'd better get a fix out soon. If this is some sort of baked-in self destruct by Microsoft they could see a class action heading their way.

I've read it has to do with this year being a leap year, and after switching to December 31st the device thinks it is the 366th day of the year.

Yay for me for having a 5th gen. iPod video. :D

:p

Seriously though, it's a good thing i saw this. I was thinking of getting a Zune for my friend. I guess i'll have to rethink that.

This happened to mine too!

I've never been involved in one of these widespread glitches before. It's actually kind of cool. :)

Seriously though, you were going to buy them a two-year-old device that isn't even sold anymore?

My 2nd Generation 4GB Zune is working just fine.

I read about this on Gizmodo and sure enough I took mine out of my pocket and it hung on the boot up screen

I fixed it . . . it's a stinkin' easy fix anyway if you're handy with a small screwdriver, just pry off the cover of the dock port, and unscrew 2 screws and gently lift the back off, unhook the battery and hdd connections and hook 'em back up and blammo you're back in business

And blammo you voided any potential warranty.

Next time you sync before they fix this you'll be back in the same boat as everyone else.

I take it the zune can hook to the computer via a usb cable or something?

In the control panel for the zun, whatever that may be, the zune equivalent to itunes, is there something where you update the firmware on your device?

I know on my Logitech harmony remote, you tan take the batteries out, plug the usb in, start the control panel, click something and it'll update the firmware settings.

I found this, I don't know if it'll be any help to you at all.
