Want Ads: Denver Football Coach

There's been a few coaches who've lost their jobs.

Crennel's gone (would love to see him again with the PATS as I'm not happy with Pees).
Mangina's gone, and supposedly the Browns are looking to interview him.'
Mike Martz is gone from the 49ers.

That's too bad. I'm not a Broncos fan but I always respected Shanahan. He'll land somewhere I'm sure. It's not really his fault the Broncos had what, seven running backs on IR this season? And since they're stuck with a below-average to average quarterback - well, that pretty much killed them this season. So I guess the Broncos are in the Cowher sweepstakes now?

I don't actually have much against Shanahan. However, when I lived in Cleveland, OH, Denver with Elway and Chicago with Michael Jordan weren't really liked.

I actually kind of like Shanahan, outside of when the Broncos were caught cheating the salary cap during his tenure.

I'm left asking, who the hell is there that Denver thinks can do better than Shanahan?

Mike Shanahan was fired by the Broncos. Wonder if he'll hate the Broncos now like he hates the Raiders should he get a new job.

Sorry to see anyone lose a job, especially these days, but I feel less bad bout this firing than most I've heard about recently.

I think the owner finally realized that the little rat faced bastard's success was completely tied to John Elway. Without that great quarterback, Shannirat was just an average NFL coach.

This is certainly the most stunning coach dismissal of the offseason; if I had to guess the reasoning, it'd be that Shanahan refused to fire Bob Slowik, refused to relinquish his GM duties, or both.

As for a replacement, though ... woof. One would hope that Pat Bowlen has Bill Cowher or Marty Schottenheimer on his speed-dial, at this point.

I doubt Cowher will go to Denver. He seems to want complete decision making power over personnel, and I'm not sure if Bowlen wants to allow that. What's odd is how Cowher said straight up immediately that he won't coach in 2009, when Cleveland talked to him on Saturday. However, reports are that the Jets are after him.

I can't see Schottenheimer going to Denver, for a lot of reasons.

Shanahan had total power, why couldn't Cowher?

You call it odd, I call it a reflection on how thoroughly fucked the Cleveland Browns organization is.

I call it "odd" because I didn't think Cowher would be that misleading, since he's usually been rather direct. I figured he'd just decline the Cleveland offer without specifics. Then again, maybe he's waiting to see if the hire Scott Pioli away from new England.

Maybe Bowlen wants to take some of that back and not give it to the head coach but to someone else as GM. After all, when you take Mauriuce Clarett with a 3rd round pick ... :wtf:

The quarterback is not below average by any rational standard he's in the freaking pro bowl, and the banged up running backs were not the problem. The lace curtain defense that laid down for pretty much everybody is what killed the Broncos post season hopes.

I don't know if having a quaterback in the pro bowl should hold any significance this year, seeing as Favre made it. :)

What the hell? Last night when I heard this, I was convinced it was a mistake. 3 mediocre years doesn't signify panic mode yet, and Denver in general had a rough time this year. Their team was quite literally falling apart. I'm still convinced that the defensive ineptitude was also as big of an issue as the injuries. But to take Shanahan out? It was rediculous.

I watched the press release, and now I'm mildly pissed. Bowlen basically said that he was releasing Shanny because he's been with the team for 21 years. So, a guy's been around for a long time, has done decently enough, and he's released because he's been around a while? Come on!

At this stage, I'm about ready to chalk this up in the same category a Plummer getting benched for Cutler. Denver was having a decent season, the defense begins to falter, Denver loses 2 games in a row, 1 really close game and 1 relatively close game, and suddenly Plummer is on the bench, being scapegoated for the any issues they were having. And now Shanny is gone because he's around too long.

Mike Shanahan = 100% CLASS.

Did anyone else see his press conference with Bowlen?

First off, how often does that happen -- a coach has a press conference with the owner that just fired him.

THEN

Says that owner is the best in all of sports. Then thanks everyone for 5 minutes. Then says how he didn't get the job done. Then says that owner is his best friend for life.

CLASS.

Thanks for everything, Mike!

How about the fact that Cutler also earned the record for most yards passing in one season of any Broncos quarterback, beating out both Elway and Plummer. Cutler isn't perfect but he's just in his third year starting. His stats in those years compare quite well to celebrated QB's like Manning. The Broncos lost out this year because of their defense.

I think it'd be a fairly evil amount of irony if Shanahan were to be hired in Cleveland. The architect of the Browns' two most frustrating losses in history, comes to town to hopefully exact some measure of revenge.....

^If he's looking for a good job and a good team, I can't see that happening, but if he decides that he is looking for a good challenge, then it's entirely possible he will be a Brown.

The Browns are quite possibly going to hire Scott Pioli to run their football operations, which ought to be a huge step in improving things. Then again, I've been hearing Kirk Ferentz (Iowa) as a name offered up to go to the Browns.
