Boardgames..DOA?

With so many kids into Video Games, I wonder if Boardgames will soon go the way of VHS. Many boardgames are available as Video games, so that isn't helping either. But this past christmas I went to three different houses and not one kid, and there were many, got a boardgame. It was all X360 games, or Ninetindo DS stuff...one kid got Chutes/Ladders. But other than that???? Boardgames were null and void....

I like board games. They're a fun low-tech group activity. I'm not longer a kid, though, so I can't say for sure if kids still play them.

They are still quite popular in my family. Pretty much all of us, varying in age from 11 to 45, got at least one board game for Christmas. Life topped my 11 year old sister's Christmas list. Guitar Hero Aerosmith was on the list as well, so I think that board games are still seen as a separate but just as fun activity as video games are.

We also play a lot of board games whenever we get together. That's the great benefit of having a large family. Over Christmas we played Clue, Life, Dominos, The Office DVD board game, a Titanic game, some High School Musical game (ick!), Scrabble, and a couple of others. We also really enjoy games where you try to guess what the other players will say based on their personalities, such as Apples to Apples (tied with Clue and Scrabble for my favorite games) and Whoonu.

Sadly, when I go home I live only with my boyfriend, so there is not many games that we can play together. When I lived at home with my sisters we played games all the time.

Yes, we play board games too. But games like BALDERDASH don't require you to use the board...and I still play MASTERMIND with my wife...but the young kids, the 5-10 year olds, I don't see much interest from them in boardgames. They see the older crowd, 12-18, playing DS and now they want one...and of course, DS sells games for the 5-10 age...

I just think, in twenty-years or so, Boardgames will be novelty items sold on the top shelf, in the local bookstore..scratch that...even Books will be gone eventually, IMO...

My favorite Christmas gift this year was the Anniversary Edition of Axis and Allies. I love that board game. I am a big board gamer....video games are fine, but I am old school. Used to love Boogle, and Sorry, and Candy Land. Gotta give some love to Connect 4 as well! There was also a Monster Island type board game for kids but I don't recall the name. Oh yeah, and Chutes and Ladders!

I like you Flux...I love Axis to Allies...when I was in the Navy, and I was for many years, we would play that game far longer than we should have, missing much needed sleep when we did!

I still love board games. We played a great round of Twilght Imerium on Sunday and War Age of Imerialism the week before. We are hoping to round up the 7 people needed for a proper game of Diplomacy soon.

Board games can be fun when you have people around to play them with (though a lot of the new wave of board games require more time to learn the rules than to actually play them).

I downloaded a board game from Xbox Marketplace. It's not quite the same when the computer can manipulate what the dice roll is and what cards you get and basically screw you over and over again.

It's not the internet and video games that are killing off board games. It's the increasingly filled schedule of the family. People honestly no longer have the time to to sit down and play a game with their family.

Oh, and the abbreviation DOA stands for Dead On Arrival, which would not fit board games at all, as they were certainly not dead when they arrived.

Real dice rols and card draws can screw you over just as well as virtual ones.

My hubby and his entire circle of friends live and die by boardgames. In fact, tonight we are going over to his boss's house to play boardgames from 5pm until probably 2am. We often have board game parties at their house that last as long as 12 hours. We play all kinds of board and card games--some require serious strategy, others require cooperation and trading.

I have played (or we now own) Battlestar Galatica (Christ, that's a hard game), Agricola, Puerto Rico (and it's off-shoot San Juan--at which I RULE!), Bang!, Power Grid, Carcassone, Settlers of Cataan, Princes of Florence, Ticket to Ride, Citadels, Shadows Over Camelot (booooring), Runebound and all the Munchkin games (which I love).

For Christmas, one of the kids got "Sorry!", so Hubby and I played it with them. We had a blast.

Ever have the dreams? If you play A&A then you know the dreams.... I am dreaming that I have to win this super important battle, in my dream I'm like "OK 3 Fighters, 5 Tanks and 7 Men against your 6 men and 4 tanks...you ready" Still dreaming yelling 2 for Tech....got one!!!!

Real dice rolls won't result in soldier/seven/soldier/seven/soldier/seven and you losing six cards before your turn on a regular basis.
