Boardgames..DOA?

Maybe if these upcoming movies based on board games are successful (Ridley Scott is directing Monopoly!!!!!), that could get some new generation interest in board games.

How about Tim Burton directing a dark and demented Candyland?

The business world conspiracies and backstabbing of Payday, directed by Oliver Stone?

Chutes and Ladders, the Brian DePalma heist movie?

And of course, Michael Bay directing Battleship.

My favorite Christmas gift this year was the Anniversary Edition of Axis and Allies. I love that board game.

I LOVE that game too! I use to be addicted to our tournaments. For awhile I was unbeatable. Eventually I ran out of people to play with because no one wanted to lose AGAIN. Bwahahahahahahah! (oops, I wet 'em)

:techman:

I don't think board games are going down the drain. My family still plays a lot of them, I know I brought several to the dorms with me, and I know at least 4 out of 7 nights a week, there is some kind of game going on in the lobby.

I too lost my playing group when I moved, so now I make my girlfriend play. So far she is into it (unless she is just being nice). Next game for her is Fortress America.

But I have played A&A for so many years. I made many custom maps, created different expansion variants, used new units, 8 sided dice, house rules...the works! I even printed out and laminated a deck of combat cards for it. I would love to get a group together in SoCal (LA) to play.

We had a paper plate used to record the records of everyone playing, I was something like 20 wins 17 loses, but my best run was 4 straight Axis victories in a row. 2 by myself, 2 with teammates.

Ahhh good times...

My daughters invited a couple other girls in the neighborhood over a couple weeks ago for a rousing 2 1/2 hour session of Risk. We played that game more than a few times in college, with all six colors taken up and others waiting for their turn. Ditto Monopoly (and cribbage and hearts etc).

The last board game I bought that was NOT for my kids (specifically) was Awful Green Things from Outer Space... which I played as a kid - come to think of it, I DID buy it for my kids this time, too.

The problem for me for board games is the time for setting up and the cost of buying the really intricate ones. There's no shortage of gaming stores around with lots of board games that seem interesting, but for $45 I am not as likely to take a chance on them, ironically, as I was when I was a lot younger and had a lot less $$$.

I have not played that game in over a decade. Classic fun.

I may be nerdier than most but I still play board games all the time. Just yesterday I spent about 4 hours playing a board game based in a Blade Runner type of universe.

Anyone around my age remember the game "Crossfire"? That was awesome at the time...you loaded over-sized BBs into anchored "guns" and had to shoot at a puck in the center of the board to move it into your adversary's scoring zone.

Somehow we managed to make the guns fire harder and faster than intended using added pressure...not enough to HARM anyone, though. In fact, it tended to wear the plastic game out prematurely. Oh well. <shrug>

one kid got Chutes/Ladders.

Until now, I had NO idea this is what you guys have instead of Snakes & Ladders!

I've never quite understood that, honestly. Snakes are far more threatening that a frakking SLIDE!

Anyway, despite being a video gamer myself, I still love board games. Settlers of Cataan is a favourite, and I have a number that I want to try. Ticket to Ride is currently up there, as I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I think board games will survive for quite a while longer. They have a certain appeal that video games can never really provide, and I think there are enough people that enjoy them to ensure their survival. Hell, I think the fact that Settlers is beginning to border on mainstream may even be a sign that they're flourishing.

It's not the internet and video games that are killing off board games. It's the increasingly filled schedule of the family. People honestly no longer have the time to to sit down and play a game with their family.
I think that's part of the problem. Even when I was a child, my parents didn't take time to play games unless I was home sick from school. I'm more into games as an adult than I was as a child.

I spent New Year's Eve with a bunch of friends playing Cranium and Scrabble, ages ranging from 11 to 60-ish. The 11-year-old counts 3 PHD's among her slain opponents in chess, and added a BA that evening to her list of fallen.

If you've never played Cranium - especially in a large group - it's a blast! It's Charades, Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit, and a bunch of other things all rolled into one. You have to be willing to risk embarrassment to really enjoy the game, but that was no problem with my friends. ;)

^ Cranium is a ton of fun with the right group of people. It's not terribly deep, but it's damn amusing sometimes!

We played a great game last night called "Pandemic." We had to play it three times through before we figured out how to beat it. It's a tough game, but very, very fun. It's a cooperative game, like Shadows Over Camelot, but requires much more strategy and teamwork.

My nephew still loves board games like Sorry and Scrabble, and a family friend, who's only 7, loves Guess Who, Sorry and Trouble. I thinn board games, for all ages, are still as popular. However, the young ones seem to grow out of the "kindergarten games" very quickly.

I played Pandemic a couple of weeks ago and thought it was pretty fun. Well not the part when I kept drawing the Pandemic card and my teammates hated me, but over all it's a fun balanced game.

I love playing board games, but I don't play as much as I used to years ago. Still play Risk, Scrabble, and a few others here and there, but more often we like to play co-op video games, Rock Band, or something like that. The family likes playing board games when we're together, but you can tell that the fun is ramped up a bit when we're all playing Rock Band and playing along with the tunes.

It's similar for us. Rock Band is a lot of fun to play with my family, and we've been playing some Nintendo Wii games together as well. We've always been big on board games and I don't think videogames would replace that, but they are a nice supplement and change of pace.

miss A&A! Still play RISK when I get together with friends in AZ but that's about it. Waiting for child to grow some so I can teach him Monopoly, RISK, Fortress America, A&A, etc..
