To New Frontier or not?

Hey, I was just wondering if people think I'd like Star Trek: New Frontier.. I've not read Peter David before, but I like KRA DeCandido's IKS Gorkon/Star Trek Klingon Empire and I also like the Deep Space Nine relaunch.. I have a question though, is NF in a serial format like DS9-Relaunch, with developing character arcs, and realistic characters?

Thanks for any help...

Mmmmm. PAD writes very funny stuff, but often side-by-side with really grim stuff, and some people hate laughing when they're sad. ;)

Serialized? Yep. But several work as duologies or oneshots.

Character arcs? Yep.

Realistic characters? Not always. Many people complain they are comic booky and superheroic, but PAD made his name writing comics and superheroes.

New Frontier is the single best series of Trek, onscreen or not.
Larger than life characters and amazingly well written plots with
great twists. If you can, start at the beginning and read all the
way through. If you can't you should be ok, most of them have
great flashback chapters that brilliantly setup the backgrounds
of the characters. All the stories have nice callbacks to already
established Trek lore at the same time as making it's own.

Peter David is a genius, this series is epic. :bolian:

I see, hmm... Maybe I should buy just that first novel (House of Cards).. It's like 2 usd at my local used bookstore... Thank you both for your replies :)

Can't go wrong like that, that's how my Trek lit addiction started.
Picking up used copies for like 2 bucks at local thrift stores.

Have fun and let us know what you think.

Do you like Braveheart? Do you like comic books?

If you answered yes to both of these questions New Frontier may be for you!

I am a fan of older comics, but Peter David is definitely in the newer school (though he has been around for quite awhile now) of comics which is just a turn off for me. I've never enjoyed any of the Trek comics, and I feel that the NF novels are basically comics in pure text form. They are kind of comparable to the Shatnerverse stuff in a way. Lots of continuity porn, lots of completely over the top/silly but kind of fun stuff. I don't like mixing Trek and comics, I've never felt that it really worked well. If it sounds good to you though, you should pick one up and give it a try.

Definitely my least favorite of the Trek series going. It seems like a lot of people really enjoy them though. Just like everything, a matter of taste. It isn't that they are terrible or badly written. I just can't get into them at all.

I am basing this on only having read three of them by the way, just to be honest about it.

I've never liked comic books. And I've read plenty of other Trek novels
outside New Frontier. Never thought the writing style felt like a comic book
in text form. Just as well written out as any other Star Trek novel.

Personal taste like you said. But I've never felt the writing to be any less
substantial than other Trek novels. Sometimes better.

New Frontier has been one of my favorite TrekLit series. It's novel (and comics)-only nature and its success actually paved the way for the later Relaunches (DS9, TNG) and other novel-only series (SCE/CoE, VAN, etc).

Very Recommended!

Also, if you get to read it from the start, the wait until the next book will not seem so long (that's how I started back in 2001 - bought all the books up to Excalibur book 3 IIRC).

Trekkerguy, though I am not a fan of the New Frontier books I certainly encourage the TC to give one a try. It seems like the majority of people enjoy them, I'm just not a fan of David's writing in general.

Not trying to imply that you have to be a comics fan to enjoy them. That is just how I look at them.

NEW FRONTIER ROCKS!

When a new NF book comes out, it goes straight to the top of my to-read pile.

josephberte, you mentioned planning to buy Book #1. Just to let you know, it starts off covering Mac Calhoun's early life on Xenex and the first arc takes in the first four novels, or you might even find the chunky little hardcover omnibus that collected those first four books.

By then you'll know if you're a Mac and PAD fan.

That Omnibus is still one of my all time favorite Trek novels. That arc would have made a kick ass made for TV movie or mini series!

They are kind of comparable to the Shatnerverse stuff in a way. Lots of continuity porn, lots of completely over the top/silly but kind of fun stuff.

I think this is a fair assessment, and I'll just add that in the moments when it does try to take itself seriously, the tremendous Mary Sue-ism makes it hard for me to go along.

I always found NF to have a good combination of humour, action and even darkness \ grimness. I don;t recall having a problem with either its seriousness or humour.

JNG - could you elaborate (i.e. give examples) on this "Mary Sue-ism"?

Hey, I was just wondering if people think I'd like Star Trek: New Frontier..

Ultimately, as some have said, the only way to know if you'll like it is to try it yourself.

I've not read Peter David before, but I like KRA DeCandido's IKS Gorkon/Star Trek Klingon Empire and I also like the Deep Space Nine relaunch..
I like both of those series but I'm not crazy about New Frontier.

I have a question though, is NF in a serial format like DS9-Relaunch, with developing character arcs, and realistic characters?
Will two out of three do? Well, more like one and a half. There are no realistic characters to be found in New Frontier. Even the characters who originally appeared on air aren't really portrayed as they appeared on TV. They're often larger than life, have deep dark soap opera secrets, turn into gods, or are simply a million times smarter, cooler, and tougher than anyone else. And pretty much all of them talk in sarcastic wisecracks all the time. As for development, there are changes in their status, but not so much in their personalities.

The books also rely too much on humour that isn't always funny. For instance, the allegedly riotous punning and hijinks over an alien character named Pheytus. If you see Phey as rhyming with prey, fey, they, grey, whey, etc, it'll take a minute to realize that his name is funny because it sounds just like fetus. But then, I don't really get why that would be funny, either. Some of the books also read like sloppy first drafts, like the one in which something is described as being essentially a small space station but is called a Dyson sphere. Or the way PAD latches on to a particular odd word and uses it to death over the course of a novel or two. Overmuch, for instance: I've read thousands of books in my life, and I'd bet that 90% of the times I've encountered that word, I've been reading a PAD Trek novel. You can argue, at least, that he has a distinctive style.

But, again, no one can decide whether you'll like New Frontier but yourself.

Hmm, I dunno now.. I really appreciate the responses, but now I'm not so sure if I should read it or not.. I am kinda picky about my science fiction now, particularly about realistic, believable characters... I need characters I can relate to.. I dunno if that makes any sense, but yeah... Anyway, I'll still check out that first book, though maybe I should just buy the first four like Therin of Andor suggested... The bookstore I went to only had books one, three, and four, though, no hardcover omnibus, though I do know what you're talking about.. I did see that at another book store this last summer and contemplated buying it... I now wish I did..

At $2 for the first book, you can't go wrong. I've been reading this series since in started in 1997, and it always jumps to the top of my reading list. I especially like Soletta's arc.

I have misxed feelings about New Frontier. I like it OK but to me it's not really Star Trek. It uses/abuses? the Star Trek universe. They are very comic book like with a lot more text. If you like fantastical stories you may enjoy the series but I would not consider it sci-fi.

Kevin

The New Frontier books were the first adult Trek books I'd read, so I am rather fond of them. IMO the series starts off really good, goes down hill alittle in the middle, and has picked up a little bit more with the last couple of books. As for myself, if you were to ask me which novel series to check, I would actually recommend Titan or Vanguard over NF.
