Did Abrams take advantage of the "pushback"?

darkwing_duck1

Vice Admiral
to get in some pickups and reshoots? I remember him saying in interviews during the strike that there were things he'd come up with and changes he wanted to make that he couldn't do legally because of the strike.

Could that in part actually be part of the reason FOR the pushback? I mean, he's talking about the film just now being "locked"...

I've seen/heard no evidence he did. However, the "freezing" comment does imply some tweaking could have been going on, post trailer release.

Could any major retooling efforts such as re-shoots be kept totally secret?

If any tweaking was performed, I'd bet it had to do with making sure the explanation on how/why the OT is safe, was made perfectly clear.

^^^ I doubt that is the case. The story has been written and recorded,
I would certainly hope they have paid no heed the ranting and squeeling
of fanboys on an internet message board about Timelines and Canon.

They pushed it back many months ago, besides the fact the studio felt it
could make more money during the summer, they had stated at one point
there was still too much VFX work to be done, and they just recently
finished the musical score. They got behind schedule.

^Yet as recently as a couple of months ago they were insisting they COULD have had it out by Christmas...

I'm just not sure which story to believe at this point...

Probably a case of they could've finished it by Christmas, but they probably would've killed themselves to do it, and the chances of something getting royally screwed up would've increased exponentially.

Yes, they could have got it done by then, but considering they just
now finished certain aspects it seems they would rather have not, and
I think that's just fine. Just because they could have rushed it doesn't
mean they should have.

It was mentioned, by possibly J.J. himself, that the pushback did give them a little leeway time. He said something to the effect that it might "push over." So they may have been on target a few months ago, but probably decided to take a little easy to fine tune. Not to mention J.J. was probably busy with Fringe or other projects as well which could have given him another reason to "take it easy" when it came to editing. Either way, a two week difference isn't enough for a "conspiracy theory."

Since they're "locking" the film in the next week, it seems fairly obvious that they (realistically) could well have had it ready for a Christmas '08 delivery.

In other words, NO. It's done as planned. The release date was not a direct element.

ALL I was asking was if JJ took adbvantage of the extra time the pushback gave him to make additional "improvements" to the project.

Nothing more or less.

All he said during the strike, by way of commiseration with someone on the picket line, was that he'd thought of a great line that day while shooting "Star Trek" and couldn't add it because he was striking (as a writer, but not as a director).

That's it. That's the total of his remarks.

Every other indication is that the producers still wish they were releasing sooner rather than later and were disappointed by the pushback.

I hope not. If the past is being changed, let it be changed and let's take it from there. None of this foolish "Both timelines exist now".

If the original timeline couldn't be altered by Nero, but only a new one created, why would Spock care? There must be PLENTY of universes where Kirk died before being born, or was never conceived to begin with.

You can't fix ALL parallel universes. If Nero wants to create one where there is no adult Kirk, let him. It won't affect the real timeline.

No. None of this divergent timeline stuff. If the past is changed, let it be changed, and let's deal with it while hoping that by Picard's time the timeline's gotten pretty much back on track so Data can continue pretending to be Holmes, Riker waits about 20 years to become a captain (?!?!?!), Sisko goes away into the swirly lights, and Janeway violates the prime directive by getting involved with the Kazon and the Ocampa and stranding her ship 70 years away from home.

Hmmm...

Let me rethink at least some of that...

The film has basically been in the can for months now. It could have been out by now if Paramount wanted. But the extra four or five months gives the studio, Abrams and the actors much more time to promote the movie at conventions and other gatherings to help insure the biggest box office possible. Plus, let's face it. The only other "boffo" film to come out at roughly that same time will be(so far as we know)the X-MEN Wolverine prequel. Which is a fair sight more competitve for TREK than Christmas '08 would probably be.

It'll be interesting to see if the actors make the rounds of the morning shows and such the way the classic TOS cast did when promoting THEIR movies...

I hope so. Aside from Jonathan Frakes and Stewart I don't recall ANY of the TNG cast promoting the last three films in the series. Not one actor aside from some Sci-Fi Channel or other cable tie-ins and interviews.
