Happy 40th anniversary Apollo 8

I had just turned 7 and remember them reading from Genesis on Christmas Eve, what a profound moment!

Jim Lovell signed my copy of Lost Moon at the local bookstore when it came out. A good book by a great American!
:techman:

"...you are GO for TLI!"

First men to see the far side with the Mk I eyeball.

I will weep for joy should I hear another capcom say those words to another flight crew.

Apollo 8 during liftoff:

Frank Borman: First stage was very smooth, this one's smoother.
Jim Lovell: Smooth and smoother? Who're you kidding?
Bill Anders: Yeah, that one felt like we'd been in a train wreck.
Frank Borman: Kick in the pants, huh?

Happy 40th anniversary to one of the most significant voyages ever taken. Not the first manned lunar landing but the first manned journey beyond Earth orbit. Imagine the anxiety of Borman, Lovell and Anders, as well as the fear and nervousness of those they left behind.

Then take a look at one of the most profound and sobering photographs ever taken.
:) If there was ever a photograph to change the way we look at ourselves, it's that one.

The BBC has an article about the taking of that famous photograph, and its subsequent impact since:
