"In Theory"

Plomeek Broth

Commander
Red Shirt
Just watched this episode last night. Do you think the crew member who fell in love with Data came across as a little psycho and creepy? I sure did for falling in love with an android. Spiner was great in this episode.

I don't think she came off any more creepy than a person who falls for someone they don't really know very well, for various reasons. It happens all the time.

But Data is not a human being. If it would have been a role reversal with the male falling in love with an android, the creep factor would have been ramped up 10 times. A male would come across as a pervert and a female as just confused or lonely.

I wouldn't call it creepy - but I've had to tell women who've moved just as fast to back off. Usually with bad results...

The thing that buged me is how easy she was to change her mind and go back to her former boyfriend. It was just too casual, "He wants me back, bye!" and seemed way too much like she was using Data to fill time.

Not unrealistic, just... harsh.

Poor Data though at the end of the episode. She takes off and all he's left with was Spot...

This ep is a good cautionary tale on dealing with someone on the rebound. It was precisely because Data was so different from her previous boyfriend that Jenna D'Sora fell for him. Also, I'm sure rumors floated around the Enterprise on how "fully functional" Data is. After all, didn't he tell Tasha that he was "well-versed in multiple techniques" of lovemaking in The Naked Now? As a man, I'd sure be curious about a female android who made the same claim! Woo-hoo! -- RR

Yeah, I think she came across as more than a little nutty. As great as Data is and as much as I consider him "alive" and a "lifeform" she was still pretty much crushing on a talking vibrator.

I also didn't like Data when he was "playing the boyfriend" it came across as too unnatural (as I guess it was supposed to) and a little too Lore-like.

I did chuckle when Riker pretty much tells Data, "I hope she mounts you on "setting 10."

Hey, before I got married I had no idea what true happiness really was.

Now it's too late.

But he got her back with an unintended cruel remark: "I shall delete the appropriate program."

I don't think she ever said "I'm going back to my old boyfriend". It was more on the lines of "I can't believe I fell for another guy who can't have any emotions with me". At least I don't remember her going back to the old BF.

As far as the creepy angle, you have to remember that Data is not like the "lovebots" we think of (like in AI, or even Futurama). For most intents and purposes, Data seems like a sort of childish man, someone who hasn't matured, but is still alive and a person. That's probably what caught the interest of the girl in question to begin with.

Does anyone even remember the b story?

I have super trouble recalling it because when I dubbed my copy, I edited out the B story so that it could fit on the hind end of my tape. I'm going to assume most people did the same with the information stored in their brains...

Enterprise turns to immaterial pudding.

That's 15 more minutes we could have had all about this flawed and failed relationship sinct the immaterial pudding was completely immaterial to what everyone remembers this episode for.

Enterprise turns to immaterial pudding.

Yeah, pretty forgettable. With the exception of one scene, where a female engineer is found dead after a horrible scream, stuck in the deck floor. I thought that was remarkably disturbing for what is basically a whimsical comedy episode.
